MRSTEK, 07 Nov 2023Don't trust their prototypes, wait for production mode... moreWell they have just reviewed the Vivo X100 and the results are pretty much consistent with the previous they had on engineering samples. The 9300 is a massive improvement over the 9200 and goes head to head with the SD 8 Gen 3, even slightly above in some cases. Even battery life is competitive with the 8 Gen 3 they had tested before on the Xiaomi 14/14 Pro. Crazy stuff.

The only vendor that will use elite x will probably MicroSoft, and even they acknowledge the limitation with windows on arm... even dedicating a whole support page and customer service battalion to handle the issue.
We can see that more and more 2-in-1 laptops, even handhelds now adopts Ryzen, those chips has the best in industry tdp to performance ratio for x86, strong graphics performance with RDNA GPUs, and compatibility... they can also emulate aarch64 if you want to.

If Qualcomm really want to take off, the only market available to them are only tablets and chromebooks, people who buy these knows those devices won't run everything they threw to it but they buy it for mobility and/or prices :-)

Or they can beg MicroSoft to finally make aarch64 to amd64 compatibility layer, binary translator or emulator :D

No chance against exynos and snapdragon

I'm still skeptical of the efficiency of this chip but we'll see. I'm surprised they went this radical instead of doing a 2+4+2 setup.

But the problem is not hardware, it's software.
Apple have rosetta to translate amd64 to aarch64, but windows don't have anything :(
This means every programs for x86_64 systems won't run on the chip.
I can see linux running box86/64 on this, especially wine absolutely destroys windows compatibility mode, but well.
They need to see the market target, my friend Jim explains it well, that Qualcomm's competitor is not apple, it's AMD and intel, since OSX user wouldn't just switch to windows to experience this chip, and x86 users probably aren't interested to switch chip architecture also...
Overall, I can't see laptop running this yet, Qualcomm and MicroSoft would need to work harder to resolve the compatibility issue first.
(maybe they can run it on tablet to rival iPads though)

As you said, the hardware can't catch up fast enough.
We already have 180B some time ago but consumer cards seems stagnant...
Our company will get 10.000 units of Mi300X with 192gb soon in Q1!
Hopes chipmakers follow suit and makes capable chips more affordable :)
And hope M3 Ultra can have 256gb unified memory, imagine the potential!

Is true, MediaTek don't release source code of their hardware to public, only OEM.
That's exactly the reason why custom rom developers don't want to work with their phone, they need to reverse engineer the source code so it's hard to do.
Now the code released on github is exactly that, community efforts to reverse engineer the code, see the maintainer, did you refer to Pixel Experience github? yes, that means the people who released the codes is not MediaTek themself, but volunteer.
Now see snapdragon's github, they release the code themself, community then can fork the code and support the devices much easier.

Also you reek of entitlement, Xiaomi.eu devs' reasons were valid, as I said earlier, working with MediaTek phones are very hard and taxing, so if they don't want to do it, it's understandable.
And you somehow makes them sounds like lazy bum...
And let's not forget custom rom devs are volunteer, they are unpaid workers, they can support whatever device they want, don't tell us what we should do if you don't contribute anything to the community!

This is why I quit developing custom rom in 2019, a lot of entitled people sending threats and spam to us, saying we should support x devices....
Well I am now happy working in AI industry for 300k a year, I actually liked developing open source software, but the entitlement.... sigh....

Now this is too bold and highly subjective claim.
