HyperOS looks like a similar example to Huawei's HarmonyOS, so it should better be good. I had enough with MIUI, and I never intended to go back to it ever again.

Never even got to buy the Xiaomi 13 when I wanted to... Chinese is $600 usd but global version is sold for $900 usd for a few months then out of stock. Now Xiaomi 14 is out and I'm still trying to find a Xiaomi 13 to buy.

It makes sense.
Just like base S23, base Xiaomi 14 has
+a big enough battery(4600mah for 6.3'' screen)
+Snap 8 gen 3
+great camera system including a telephoto camera
+flat screen
+its less expensive
+easier to hold/use in hand due to smaller size
Overall it offers similar experience with 14pro, while asking for less money.
In Europe, both of these devices will be very expensive anyways, so again the less expensive Xiaomi 14 will seem the better choice for most.

There isn't much offerings in compact flagship category, so it's perfectly normal to be more popular. Besides finally Xiaomi added usb 3.0 support and 4K on front camera, for what they were criticized for years. Now the big question is about software - are their new project HyperOS will continue policy to keep all goodies for china ROM???

Yes 522 ppi display on Pro is overkill.. 460 ppi on vanila version is enough.
Let alone USB 3 model and charging speed. Only few people notice about that.

pl2rts, 11 Nov 2023Wont this also proof that people actually want smaller phones ? Only if the smaller phone has very similar specs as the bigger one, and if it’s also significantly cheaper.

pl2rts, 11 Nov 2023Wont this also proof that people actually want smaller phones ? only people who really like compacts will buy this, for example @notafanboy he just bought it... the rest only makes a fuss when they actually use phones 6.7 inches and above.

I would choose the 14 specifically for the flat screen.
Curved screens offer no functional benefits, just disadvantages for a higher cost.

basically, the pro only gets a minor advantage over the 14. An adjustable aperture.
On top of that, the 13 to 14 is a clear upgrade. Whereas the 13 pro to 14 pro is... mostly a sidegrade, besides the Gen3 soc.

Did a quick comparison between the 14 and the 14 Pro and the only difference that matters to me is the slightly better main camera (it has variable aperture from 1.4-4.0f on the Pro and a fixed aperture of 1.6f on the regular 14), which is a price I'd gladly pay for the markedly more compact, easier to handle 14 (I've had variable aperture on my Note 10 and didn't see much advantage using it for the photos I take). No wonder it's generating more interest than the Pro.

It's not just that the pro isn't a lot better than the regular.
The regular 14 got a decent upgrade over the 13.
The 14 pro got kind of a downgrade or maybe sidegrade to the 13 pro, aside from the standard annual chipset upgrade.

pl2rts, 11 Nov 2023Wont this also proof that people actually want smaller phones ? The reason people would go with the non Pro is because of the price, not because they absolutely need a smaller screen. Having 98% of the specs at a lower price is attractive
