Weekly poll: do flagship chipsets still matter?

12 November 2023
The latest silicon brings higher performance and advanced features for image processing, game graphics and AI. But do you really need all that?

if you think LCDs are bad, you may refer to garbage yet prehistoric TN display. IPS is the most superior type of LCD. you can't compare it with oled. that's like comparing between corolla to a tesla

you have to suffer, 17 Nov 2023hmmm yes 7 year old chipset with android 13 i bet you woul... moreI don't recommend this 2019 phone to anyone, at all. I'm using it as evidence for my point.

This doesn't invalidate my point which was about how software needs to get less stupid so that people don't judge hardware as the one thing that gets old fast (not in a relative sense), but of course I'll want to replace this phone. The unit itself is 3 years old, so the battery suffered a lot of wear and, well, it isn't user replaceable. No relevant phone has one. Also, the camera's PLASTIC cover cracked after it fell to the floor, which is kinda amazing. It should be easy to replace. It's cheap plastic. Pretty much no part can be bad, unlike a battery, but there's none to buy out there.

The cheap camera hardware paired to the old, bottom of the barrel Qualcomm ISP really is a bad combo, but I had much nicer results using GCam hacks. So not something I can recommend, but hey, the relative miracle was in software. ASICs and efficiency are valid areas of improvement for SoCs. Raw performance tho?

As far as that goes, if that factor alone was the only deciding factor to whether I should upgrade, I just wouldn't. Android 13 isn't irrelevantly old, LineageOS 20 had some nice performance improvements, and this inefficient 7 years old SoC can drive the crappy but bloat-free OS smoothly, along some well-made apps, until the battery gets below 20%. And it often gets there fast because it's 3 years "off-the-shelf old" now, and 4 years old at all.

Bet you can't be more specific than that! 😈 My phone has no toggle and it's smooth, unless the battery gets below 20% and the kernel thinks it has to be on the lowest performing settings you can think of.

It's a cheapass Redmi 7 running good software, which is essential: Android 13 through LineageOS. MIUI is trash.

It's not about pushing the phone to its limits 24/7 but pushing the phone to its limits occasionally and not having to worry since it's a flagship and still works as intended, for the most part. Flagship phones are still kind of overrated ngl, companies just make them look so much better than midrangers

Anonymous, 14 Nov 2023they don't matter since: 1)mobile gaming is a joke 2... moreIt sucks you can't get liquid cooling on a phone. But it would make phones feel like the things we had in the 80's (I've had a few of them) and mobile gaming shouldn't be so heavy that you need liquid cooling in the first place. The people who want absolute power from their phones should probably check out the Asus ROG phones/ Razer phones/ a half decent gaming rig for the price of a*good* Samsung phone.

I don't think so, only if someone's gonna use it for social media browsing or watching Youtube Videos.

honestly, if you only tend to use the phone for lightweight activites that doesn't require as much power as heavy editing (i.e.: Capcut, Kinemaster, Alight Motion) or gaming (i.e. Asphalt) all while wanting it to last long, They don't matter (and if you want to), you can go for a phone with a lower midrange processor, Like a Snapdragon 695, or a Dimensity 1080/7050.

Anonymous, 14 Nov 2023and even a pixel phone you can only keep a locked bootloade... moreThat was the nudge! Whoever shouldn't care about privacy, I guess...

GrapheneOS as a project discourages the use of "custom ROM". That's a very old term that we all adopted but it's not correct because of "ROM" - it's not "read only" if one of their greatest use is to have systems that you can modify. They are custom and part of that is to allow for even more change, down to the core of the system itself (rooting per se, using Magisk and *posed for their modules, placing APKs in places where they don't really belong, the tricky installation of MicroG, and so on). Just saying for the sake of it, I don't like or encourage rooting, the MicroG project and whatnot, anymore. Would be dumb to defend that and bootloader relocking at the same time.

I guess its use is valid exactly because it's a widely used term, but this silly grammarian-level discussion was brought up so I'm defending why I think it's wrong.

                                they don't matter since:
                                1)mobile gaming is a joke
                                2)they thermal throttle very quickly

I won't consider anything without stereo sound regardless of the SOC because videos sound weird with all the audio coming from one side. I personally don't need the latest and greatest soc, the main reason I upgraded from my mate 20 pro was the lack of ram.

Anonymous, 14 Nov 2023With Android even flagship chips stutter and lag so yes you... moreDon't look at phones that are made to get slow (just about any phone on their stock OS) so you think it's the SoC, the immutable factor, feeling the weight of age, to judge it. That's software, and not all software is the same.

Ever tried running bloat-free Android once, even if on a crappy phone? The lag is minimal and occasional, but still easy to spot because of the major bottlenecks of older/cheaper phones: storage speed and memory bandwidth (which doesn't need to be the best, but it's almost unbelievable how some cheap/older phones have it ungodly slow).

Goes without saying that any phone with hardware better than I described and software that makes sense to even exist would make for a much better, *lag-free* experience, even without getting into the realm of flagships.

I really don't advise using an alternative OS tho (the term "custom ROM" is wrong) unless you have a Google Pixel, because then you can flash whatever you want to it and keep the same low level security features (like a locked bootloader) as stock.
