Xiaomi accomplished in 10 days with phones what sony accomplished in decades of EVF development for the a6000 in EVF dots. Moral of the story, switch to selling phones instead of making electronic viewfinders.

UltraHD, 13 Nov 2023Same thing goes with my country in Europe but you have to p... moreI think you meant upfront cost?
I got my current 1TB 15 PM from metrofone UK for £70 monthly payment for 24 months and one time £115 upfront cost, paid only once, no trade-in.
But as I said before each carrier have different terms of service it might so each people pay differently.
Like my experience when I was in Japan with NTT Docomo, IIRC the 1TB 13 PM cost me 6k JPY each month for 23 month, and here's the quirk: if you decide to keep the device you'll need to pay 150k in the 24th month or you can return the phone and upgrade to the latest phone by renewing the contract.
This means you can save half the price by just upgrading and keeping the contract on.

RobinArc, 13 Nov 2023Thanks for explaining in much details. I didn't know t... moreIn my country Malaysia, the phone is locked from using sim cards so it can only work with wifi. If its a dual sim phone, usually the sim slot 1 will be locked while slot 2 is usable but I have read more telcos are now locking both slots.
As for the user, their credit rating will drop if still dont pay after a few months. They will be blacklisted from getting contract with other telcos in the country. These telco phones as we call it here always display messages from the respective telco when starting even after the phone is fully paid up.

RobinArc, 13 Nov 2023Thanks for explaining in much details. I didn't know t... moreIt's mostly as Training Addict said, but the specifics differ with each carrier.
In my experience in USA with Verizon, when I asked the same question to the customer service, she said that it should be thought as an interest-free credit card.
So basically the first day after your late payment, the data will be cut off and you will be charged with late payment fees.
And if it goes for long enough your credit score will be deducted and debt collector will be dispatched to confiscate the phone.
And for my experience with NTT Docomo and Three it is more or less the same.

Anonymous, 13 Nov 2023If you're refering to US, then samsung and iPhone wins... moreCarrier contract is also the main way people in my country Malaysia get the latest Iphones albeit we dont have attractive buyback deals such as those offered by carriers in USA and Japan.
We call it telco contract and users usually need to sell the telco phones themselves. There are unscrupulous people selling locked phones (user didnt pay the instalments according to the contract therefore phone locked by the telco provider) in the used market.

Anonymous, 13 Nov 2023If you're refering to US, then samsung and iPhone wins... moreSame thing goes with my country in Europe but you have to pay for the phone too, for example i'm paying about 26€ a month for unlimited everything and for iPhone 15 (base model) i would have to pay additional 55€ so that would be about 91€ a month for a brand new base iPhone.

RobinArc, 13 Nov 2023Thanks for explaining in much details. I didn't know t... moreIt depends on the law, but in Poland it looks like this: you are entered on the list of debtors and you are charged interest for each unpaid day, if it lasts more than 6 months, the operator block your phone and takes the case to court

But may I know what would happen if the person is unable to pay his monthly bill? Would it void the contract and take back the phone?

Not really sure if this means anything. One+ claims their Open set a one day sales record for foldables on Amazon in NA and India. Again, not sure if that means anything. Most people probably buy their devices directly from the manufacturer. We will have to see where the numbers are at the end of the year.

LoneOwl, 13 Nov 2023Every year we read how great new Xiaomi flagships sell in C... moreIf you're refering to US, then samsung and iPhone wins because they have (carrier) contract payment.
If you don't know what carrier contract is, basically you pay monthly internet plan and the carrier (internet service provider) will give you a free phone.
So let's say you pay $20 bucks each month for internet to verizon they will give you a free iPhone, in return you cannot switch to other internet provider (carrier like AT&T) this refered as a 'locked' phone.
This means that, theoretically, even poor people can afford iPhone this way.
We can see that even people working at fast food for minimum wages have the latest iPhone Pro Max.
This scheme is also prevalent in Japan and Australia, both of which also has iPhone as the market leader.
Now contrary to contract payment, Xiaomi, as far as I know there is not a carrier that offer the phone.
This means to get the phone you either buy it fully or get a loan, both arguably is hard to do compared to pay $20 for phone and internet.
