PatrickCzech, 15 Nov 2023It means that I was an iPhone user amost the whole life. I ... moreAh so you’re a former iPhone user, not a formal iPhone user.
Also you say you were once an iPhone user that said…er..’shits’ about Android, and now you have flip flopped and talk cr*p about iOS. So really you’re just a fanboy that’s switched teams 🤷
People like you with this ‘because I use one, I have to hate on the other’ mentality are really the problem.

SuperSpruce, 15 Nov 2023Here are my ratings of common texting applications/protocol... moreRCS wasn't made by google, they push for it cause the GSM association wants to replace standard sms with RCS and it is thus supported my a large number of phone carriers. It's an open standard and if adopted would work across platforms. It's pretty good but it's obviously not as deeply integrated into an ecosystem so doesn't look as fancy.
The only reason why iMessage and RCS aren't huge internationally cause messaging wasn't cheap in many countries in eu and Asia so once people got mobile data WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger were more attractive choices for people. And while WhatsApp being meta is not a great thing it's a lot like iMessage, people got WhatsApp before it was bought by meta and by the time meta's privacy issues became a popular concern most people were already on it so it became near impossible to move to something new (the way people are locked into iMessage cause everyone else is in it) briefly it felt like people would move to signal and telegram, but only some people did so eventually the rest if them left as well.

One thing they have excelled very well is at marketing. They are just another smartphone brand with good marketing, that's it.

Anonymous, 15 Nov 2023There are so many options out there WhatsApp Telegram Si... moreThe reason why so many people are pushing for RCS is because all of the other options you named require installing another app. And yes, that is too hard for a lot of people. Plus, if the US were to switch en masses to third party apps, there's no clear consensus for which app to use, so most people would have to install multiple apps, and just trust Facebook/Meta/Telegram/etc. with their data.

Here are my ratings of common texting applications/protocols:
SMS: D, cross-platform, but outdated and feature-poor
RCS: D, more feature rich but controlled by Google, so I don't trust that. I don't even think it's cross-platform lol
WhatsApp: C, works well and cross-platform but privacy invasive because Meta
Telegram: ?, never used it but I've heard it's pretty good
iMessage: B, feature-rich, reliable, seamless but only on Apple devices. Privacy is middle of the road
Signal: A, reliable, cross-platform, and actually private!

Signal messenger works across Android and iPhone/iOS 👍
It's also possible to add an iPad as a linked device for larger screen video calling.
Signal is open-source and made by a non-profit, doesn't track your chat/call data.

Anonymous, 15 Nov 2023LMAO! Wow it’s so sad that the company that people love and... moreIt's not about merging systems anyone judges as "superior" or "inferior" because of how obsessed nerds are with such judgment - do you realize how that backfires to you?
While I don't see this as a solution, any US person that can't iMessage their close family or friends would be annoyed by this incompatibility. Some of them are in such a mind-closer colored bubble that switching to another app is not an ideal option, even given the tangible benefits. I've seen online US friends of mine joke about this even when they don't reeeally care about it (we were joking about it in Discord 🤢 after all), and seen a few online friends from other countries switch to iPhone because of this and the Apple and Meta deal. Does anything scream "status obsessed" more than this? It's not about iMessage or Instagram for iPhone being better or worse than their alternatives, but rather "why do you need them to be better"?
All of this is irrelevant to all other Americans (look at how broad that term is, I'm taking it for myself - a Brazilian) not obsessed with status homogeneity, specially outside of your North American hellscape. Not to mention that the *rest of the world* also exists and doesn't care, as well.
