It's specifically for KDDI and has nothing to do with the Xperia U or Xperia L, even as their successors. Xperia UL is still part of Xperia Z family, where U stands for Ultimate and L stands for LTE. Correct me if I wrong.

So you have the Xperia U which was a lower mid range phone and the Xperia L which is a mid-range camera phone so you put them together and you get the Xperia UL which is actually a high end model akin to the Xperia Z. Does this make sense to anyone? How much longer can Sony carry on naming its phones by pulling random letters out of a bag of scrabble tiles - even with a triple word score the UL can't possibly be as good as the Z :-)

The z is a very high profit product that sells like crazy, 4.6 million SOLD in 40 days, not shipped like galaxy S4, but actual sales.
The first batches were sold at very high profit, even with an average profit of just 50 dollars for each sold Z Sony bagged nearly quarter of a billion dollars in those 40 days alone. LG dont have any products capable of selling in high volumes at high profit.
