I literally have a 13PM next to me and, to get to the home screen, a swipe up is required, even after Face ID already unlocked the phone.

What?!?! 😁 There's no swiping for opening apps, you just open app and that's it, so seamless and effortless.

Anonymous, 24 Nov 2023We need TouchID in California because we wear sunglasses. You don't think people wear sunglasses anywhere else? 😁 Face ID works with suglasses, i'm surprised after all these years you even mentioned that.

DaFink, 24 Nov 2023What’s lazy is your take on the situation. Writing off Appl... moreWhen a manufacturer tried having face biometrics and FP scanner in the same device, almost no one used the former. And i don't mean a camera-based system, but proper 3D face scanning (Mate 20 Pro)

I might have been too harsh. In 2017, faceID was the best solution. But in 2023 not so much. Hardware is bulky and has too many components to fail, requires a massive cutout, and requires a mostly uncovered face to work properly

Maybe my opinion could change if they make the other sensors work under the display, or separate the front camera from the module to allow replacing without breaking FaceID, which they just won't do because of how anti-repair they are.

Only occasion where i see it being easier is if you're interacting with a notification on the lock screen

Writing off Apple’s decision to not pursue under display fingerprints scanners as lazy, especially considering the time and costs associated in developing the Face ID system.

You can prefer fingerprint based biometrics by all means, that’s personal preference. Judging Apple as being lazy though simply because they opted for a different solution, is a bit of a low brow way of looking at it.

My ultrasonic FP scanne... moreWhere you need Fingerprint scanner when your phone is already unlocked before you even touch the phone? Fingerprint scanners are outdated tech, it needs you pressing the screen everytime you want to active it, my banking apps, whatsapp and few other apps are behind Face ID, i just open those apps normally with fingerprint scanner it's one extra step hundred of times a day to use those apps. Sorry i already lived those times, won't go back 😉

My ultrasonic FP scanner in the S21U is so much more practical than that overcomplicated. built-to-break sensor array.

Apple only sticks with FaceID because they were lazy to develop a proper under display FP scanner, and now that other manufacturers did it, they just refuse to take the L

Anonymous, 24 Nov 2023Yes. Possible to have both fp and face unlock, just like ho... moreApple were first market with a viable and reliable biometric unlock system with Touch ID. Oh sure it had been tried on Android previously with the likes of the Atrix 4G, which had a fingerprint scanner that didn’t really like scanning fingerprints. It was then quietly dropped as a feature until Touch ID showed how it should be done.

Touch ID wasn’t then replaced by Face ID for any usability or reliability concerns. More Apple looking to differentiate with a new take on biometrics. So your ‘Apple sucks at making an under display fingerprint scanner’ isn’t really based on any actual track record or observable performance metrics.

Apple simply haven’t chosen to go down that particular route with biometrics, disappointing for some, maybe. But the market performance of devices sporting Face ID since its debut has shown that it has been a solid success.

Again, would I like to see both on an iPhone, yeah why not eh. Do I understand why Apple would deem it unnecessary, sure. Does all this seem to be upsetting you, it certainly appears so, why, who knows 🤷

Fingerprint scanners are outdated, Apple bet the right horse years ago and now they are so much ahead of competition.
