TCL 40 NxtPaper 5G unboxing

26 November 2023
A phone with paper-like display and next-gen connectivity.

Well, I had the opportunity to use the NxtPaper 40 Pro and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. It was a well made, sturdy device with a very good display. I like this kind of fake e-ink display which isn't anything more than an LCD with a filter on it. While I absolutely hate LCD's because of that unpleasant glare of the back-lighting I had no issues with this throw at paper-like LCD. No issues with the colours either. There were actually only 3 downsides, the lack of any decent software support (in terms of major releases and security patches), the max brightness is too low, especially as the filter makes it harder to see what is on the display on a bright day and the sharp edges of the frame towards backside. It's asymmetrical. While the edges from the frame towards the screen are very nice it is the opposite for the back side. For this reason only I would opt for this 5G version as it is more "old-school" in terms of design with rounded edges and frame. The NxtPaper 50 series do solve the brightness issue but not the two other issues. Anyway I had no issues what so ever to use 40 pro as a daily driver for about 2 months. Now I'm seriously thinking of buying this 5G version as a back-up phone.

At least a 1080p screen would have been better 720p is not sufficient for such a phone

Don't tell me your one of those people that think only OLED can save energy based on what it's displaying

Monochrome or desaturation will save energy that just a fact

If you want to argue that this display on the TCL isn't anything special I can accept that but implying no energy savings is absurd

IpsDisplay, 26 Nov 2023Are you sure that there are no battery benefits for running... moreYes. No benefits, as it's an lcd panel, not amoled. Therefore no battery benefits.

nxtpaper modes are direct copies of the "ebook" modes already offered (years ago) by huawei/honor in emui, magic ui, and similar to the reading/paper modes in xiaomi's miui. Monochrome mode is also available in every android phone already. Put a matte protector on and it's the same thing.

TCL is using marketing gimmicks. Nothing more. they've applied a good quality multi layer matte protector on top of nxtpaper display, but these multi layer matte anti glare protectors can also be purchased by anyone for any other phone. They just cost a bit more than the usual cheaper grainy matte protectors.

A lot of people seem to be complaining that its not real e-ink, but i think thats for the best. There are real e-ink phones from hisense and while the screens look nice, they have horrendously slow refresh rates. This doesn't suffer from that drawback. I hope TCL goes on to make more phones with this tech, and more powerful phones with this tech.

Eink is so underrated. I would get a Eink phone made by Samsung in a heartbeat. This just seems like a cheap knockoff. Go all the way or don't do it at all

This is NOT an EINK device.

It is a typical LCD phone with a matte anti glare protector. There are absolutely no battery benefits compared to a standard lcd android phone.

People need to stop falling for TCLs marketing

But imma bet the gsmarena is gonna give it the standard generic review treatment 😕😔

Can you imagine what if another option for better GPU performance wasn't just fans / heat pipes what if they gave a flagship soc a screen like this would the efficiency skyrocket???

Gsmarena team in your full review can you please do a battery run test with the display in nxtpaper mode only if love to see the endurance in that state

I understand 1080p60 but thats sort of a dealbreaker. CPU performance is fine for the price however

                                      Nxtpaper 40 is a 100% gimmick

In italy i use one last week and laughed because it so bad and tcl lying marketing this like it is eink. Its nothing like eink. Its just usual android phone with glare n matte protector

Seems like a lot dont seems to understand that this phone cause of it's screen is not made for smartphone addicts. This screen consumes a lot less power then LCD and AMOLED probably so you cant really enjoy playing games or watch video content with it.

For people who use light web browsing and mostly calls and text that phone be probably best. The problem with this phone is that with this screen it is too big and should be at most like 6inch or 5.5 inch screen to make sense as you dont really need that large screen for it when you cant enjoy the big screen on gaming graphics and videos with quality if this is the type of e-inc
