Weekly poll: how much RAM is enough?

03 December 2023
Some phones these days have as much as 24GB, with others you can't get more than 8GB. And what's with virtual RAM, anyway?

Sort by:

I'm still using XZ Premium. It has 4gigs snd i can tell you for certain it's not enough.
Evolve with times I'd say. The more RAM the better. How much is enough depends on what each one is doing with their phone BUT, for the average user, I would say 8 would be more than enough.

For me? Well I'm using AI stuff and a lot of photo editing. 4gigs are definitely not enough in 2023 to do much. Come to think of it, in 2017 XZ Premium was top of the class. 6 years later it's so far behind, I'm in owe. Technology is evolving really fast, but i can say we are in the peak smartphone era now.
Now everyone is all about AI and camera very slight improvements. So yeah.. peak smartphone era since 2021 i would say.

12 is enough. 8 is my minimum. But I am a heavy power user. iOS devices can get away with less but 3GB is not enough on iOS anymore.

      8GB of LPDDR5(X/T) is good.
      10+GB of LPDDR4(X) is good.
LPDDR3/2/1 is uh... it's own thing

LBJ23, 05 Dec 2023Android ecosystem in China is vastly different from the res... moreDid you try a phone without Google services and apps? Try and you will change your mind...

By current power houses available for limited processing needs, any SoC above SD8G1 and any more LPDDR5X RAM above 12GB is useless.

In contrast, when you have to pay in full for smartphones, no matter how powerful and spacious in RAM it is, Pay properly by your decision. 512GB is need, 12GB is need, SD8 Gen1 power is need. More is money wasting. If they start to practice AAA titles REAL port to smartphone from developer themselved with the view of Smartphones First, then Those 3 factors are minimum to unlimited.

I tried opening 4 heavy games in Android 8GB RAM (Genshin Impact, Diablo Immortal, Ragnarok X & League of Legends: Wild Rift), all of them in the foreground using Split View for the 2 former games while the 2 latter games in 2 Floating Views. And what i can tell using DevCheck Pro app's floating RAM monitor is that the Android phone's 8GB RAM isn't enough to handle 4 heavy games all at once in the foreground since it force stops one of the games. So after that, i decided to enable the extra 5GB of virtual RAM, and it somehow successfully run all 4 heavy games all together while also occupying 80% of the actual RAM. I think the extra virtual RAM is really useful whenever the actual RAM isn't enough to keep at least 4 heavy apps in the foreground. 8GB RAM isn't enough for heavy multitaskings and not even 12 GB RAM would be enough next year or so for premium tablet devices. I can conclude that as Android apps become more & more memory demanding in the upcoming future then RAM must be increase and enough is never enough!

d, 05 Dec 2023yes and no future updates requires a lot moreYeah, if the user wants to keep the phone for 3-5 years, it's a good idea to have at least 12GB of RAM, but most people changes phone as fast as they change clothes. A common user only care if the phone works without lagging while an advanced user thinks in a long-term.

It's also worth to mention that daily accidents might happen, like dropping the phone without IP68 on water or shattering the display, battery might start to swell after some incorrect charging cycles and so on. These factors might make people get a new phone too if the repair costs too much.

I would choose between 8GB and 12GB and no virtual RAM.

8GB seems to be most correct choice for any phone to keep its perfomance, since Android is getting heavier and more demanding just like all common apps used by people.

12GB is, at least to me, more like an extra "breath" for the phone to keep good performance, in special with more advanced users.

Anything above 12GB seems like pure megalomania from both brands and users that likes big numbers to impress others.

I think 8GB RAM is enough even for 144Hz gaming, if the OS is purpose built and lightweight. But with ray tracing and all, this will change soon.

As for Virtual RAM, there's no option which says, "My phone doesn't support it." which is exactly my opinion.

Android ecosystem in China is vastly different from the rest of the world. Chinese phone manufacturers are basically "forced" to produce phones with larger memory configurations because without the supervision of Google,
Chinese apps are (almost) all memory hogs and take up a lot of storage space since those apps are all trying to include every single feature in one app (so that you don't have the need to download apps from their competitors).
When app developers do not care about performance and storage optimization, the only thing phone manufacturers can do is to stack up memory and storage on their devices.

In a few years time, apps will become more memory hungry. So to prepare for what's coming, it is best to have more RAM then required so the main players will have that said amount of RAM at that point of time.

i personally think, every feature must be allocated its own ram size, it should be allocated and not be shared(must assume multitasking or all features at the same time).

SinEate.r, 04 Dec 2023I'm so are you happy to happy with 4 gigs ram oo. Ok g... moreYes cause i use my phone for regular usage like call, what's app, map, music, video, youtube, calculator, net banking, shopping, some time use camera if needed and play games like PUBG or some online strategy game if i am free.
I never felt any problem with my current phone.
It is a decent phone as it can capture 4K videos and can decode those too, thus hardware is efficient.
Even at high usage i saw my phone had 2 GB free RAM available while playing PUBG in normal settings.
So, happy with what i bought and have.

8GB RAM is the minimum for optimal performance on an Android phone these days. 12GB RAM is the sweet spot for premium/high-end performance, and anything over 16GB RAM is kinda overkill and is more of a "nice-to-have".

Note: 6GB RAM is just satisfactory enough for everyday normal tasks, but I wouldn't call it optimal. 4GB RAM however will absolutely bottleneck your daily use.
