Flashback: Symbian Belle almost caught up to Android, but it was too late

03 December 2023
Anna seemed like a major improvement over old Series 60 5th edition phones, but Belle was a massive upgrade and it only came a few months after Anna.

Anonymous, 04 Dec 2023Neither could symbian match Android nor can Nokia match up ... moreNokia could survive but MIcrosoft had Troyan hourse inside of Nokia. IF Nokia ,at that times, just firmly kept doing Symbian with new touch interface they had on N8 and make good devices like Nokia 808 i N8 they wouldn't die.

Imagine if the reason was that Nokia was lazy, lol

I miss my Nokia 808 Pureview...last truly innovative phone. I had two in row one after first died. After that only Galaxy Note 4 was worth keeping longer (last with IR blaster, removable battery, good grip without case). They just do not make phones like before...

The thing is that in a free market closed source system competes with very high risk and high profit.
Open source system always will arise in free market and capture siginficant portion.

What mostly people forget about is, that android popularity grows so quickly thanks to AOSP. Any competitors that demand fee and offer closed source OS was already lost before entering the battle.

It wasn't late - Stephen Elop deliberately delayed the premiere and then there were no further versions because... Elop deliberately killed Symbian.
The entire work took longer because Elop probably had no intention of even trying to fight for the market. Same with MeeGo.
Otherwise, there would be no place at Nokia for Windows Phone on market. Unfortunately, this experiment killed Nokia. Nokia had everything then - Nokia maps, music, e-mail, etc. Windows Phone was completely unusable back then, it had no options, no applications at all.

Now I'm really afraid you are correct. 2trilion company don't pay tax using kids to assemble phones in foxcom. Subsides. Jumping from buildings it's all common knowledge. But nobody but few % knows that or care.

“Donna was scheduled for late 2013/early 2014 and would have been exclusively released on phones with dual-core processors”

Meanwhile android already move to dual core in early 2011 and multicore in 2014 .. Nokia was too slow and currently Hmd is still slow to adapt with changes in mobile market.

Trying to transform a non touch UI into a touch UI was Nokia's doom. Instead of sticking with Symbian they should have went with Maemo OS. Harmattan's User interface was just great. The swipe UI of the N9 was ahead of its time. No navigation buttons like on Android or a physical home button like on iOS, just gesture controls like you nowadays see on Android and iOS.
Also Maemo was very cost efficient. Compared to the Symbian department just a small group of people worked on Maemo. The Symbian management were afraid to lose their jobs if the upper Nokia management decided to go with Maemo
Instead, which lead to a "war" between Symbian and Maemo management.

If Finns stuck with symbian they will go bankrupcy like they do with Microsoft Windows Phone! Customers are changing and Nokia is good at making bricks, but not good at do what customers wants.

The best European OS Nokia Symbian Belle Feature Pack2 it's in the last Original Nokia Device 808 .
Carla it's new Os what transferring from old Processor to new ARM Processor use in Android from time years 2012.
But something or someone I don't didn't to continue the New Os and the software programs it's cancelled and all Stop to Nokia
Belle Feature Pack 2 and Symbian it's practically dead in 2012.
And after sell Nokia to Microsoft implementing Windows Phone a most big failed from history!!!
To bad because new Nokia OS it's the best European alternative to this mess Android and iOS!

Operating systems still demand you go online to discover how to use them when each phone sold should have its own complete manual in its operating system from the off! Why should anyone NEED an internet connection to find out hw to use ANY machine at all?
In addition might one day modern phones sporting cameras that do panoramas agree to allow the ultrawide lens to do panoramas as well? My old LG does on its 16mm f1.9 lens, but an iPhone wont, A huawei wont, a Xiaomi wont, and reviewers everywhere side with manufacturers and do not tell you they dont either, so you only find out after you've bought it, not nice (unless a mate has one and tells you..)
The Nokia N8's camera is still as good in good light as an iPhone from last year. Think about it. The Pureview outresolves ALL current phone still, because Nokia did not ever touch quad bayer sensors in the Finn Days. The Lumia 950XL and 1020 also outresolve a new iPhone's main cam....
As a photographer I owe much to Nokia, who recently have saved me thousands of pounds.....and one day I may sell my bright red Pureview 808 for even more!
Another thing, they all have headphone jacks, FM RDS radios, and do RAW out of the box, except the 808 which only does jpegs. The stumbling block is low light, low res video, and terrible panorama modes that barely function at all. Blame Microsoft for quitting-Shame!!

Besides, Symbian supported Java installation files, so there were options

Oh man, back in 2012, I was the only one in my gang with a Symbian device (Nokia 700). Rest all my friends had an Android. I didn't feel left out or anything, had enough games and cool "QT" based apps.

I remember when Belle FP2 released and then pulled back immediately due to some issue. I read the news from GSMArena itself haha. I never updated my 700 to FP2 after reading that. Even after the update resumed.

One thing I can confidently say is that it definitely looked way better than TouchWiz or any android skins at that time for sure.

Sad that it had to end on a bad note.
