There is a reason why smartphone cameras have 12 megapixels and not 0.12 megapixels, which would look awful. Because megapixels do matter, of course! For example, the terms "10x optical", "5x optical", "2x optical" are just marketing terms and not physical specs! The associated physical specification is pixels per angle. If a "2x optical" camera had just 3 megapixels instead of 12, the result of the "2x" camera would be mostly identical to 2x digital zoom!
And if a "5x" camera has 48 megapixels, then 2x digital zoom from the 5x camera can be mostly identical to a 12 megapixel "10x" camera.
The main problem here is the color filter array. Some manufacturers can't handle the Quad Bayer color filter array. It would help them to use a high resolution Bayer sensor instead of Quad Bayer.
Another reason why megapixels are important: Quad Bayer as well as Bayer can produce artifacts, which reduce the amount of true detail. But if the resolution of the sensor is much higher than what the lens can resolve at pixel level, then artifacts go away. So, it even makes sense to have a super high resolution: The image would be soft at pixel level, but there would be no artifacts and you would capture everything what the lens can resolve.

It's just cheaper to buy a V20 or add a few more and get something newer from the budget lineups of existing brands.
Now if only the surviving manufacturers stop shoving 4gb rams on budget phones lmao.

I buy S23 Ultra just to feel if it actually can match my DSLR, seems actually just too far away. How much MP doesn't really matter. Maybe hope Apple do something not too focus on higher MP, but make it hardware better, Phone camera just to compact, definitely need other breakthrough instead too much rely on heavy processing software.
