The next Sony Xperia Pro is rumored to have a rotating camera ring

18 December 2023
The ring will give you manual control over zoom, aperture and focus, just like on a real camera.

        Sounds nice

PhoneFreak45, 18 Dec 2023You are so blissfully ignorant as to what photographers act... moreActually, most pros want a camera that's very fast to use and produces good results. Things happen in a moment and you either capture it correctly or not. Real cameras let you individually switch features between auto and manual, or let you adjust constraints on the automatic values. It's not that the automatic values are imperfect, but that you might need to specify an intent. Real cameras have dials that are easy to reach and assignable to parameters. Full manual is extremely uncommon to use.

Now here's a "pro" cellphone that puts a ring around the lens? What I hate about polarizing filters is that they're a ring right at the front lens. They're not reachable with a hood on, reaching for them throws off the balance of the camera, and you're likely to accidentally smudge the glass while adjusting them. It's a bad place for a dial.

Sony should have asked Asus how to build those ultrasonic sensors into the frame. They'd be perfect as assignable scroll wheels. It doesn't jostle the phone or require a weird grip to operate them.

Miffy, 21 Dec 2023None of this matters as Sony's software and support suck. Yeah they're software support is on par you'd get it straight away lol. I guess Chinese brands have better software then huh.

If this is the case then it'll definitely be an interesting device. Why have fixed or 10 stops of variables aperture in app when you can just switch automatically. Tho I probably won't get this I'll probably just enjoy the pure hardware display. It's definitely an interesting device to behold. Next year is definitely a hardware day for Sony.

Minu, 20 Dec 2023Sony Mobile has no relation to Sony Corporation apparently.... moreYou got wrong info. Sony has never licensed it's Sony name to no one. Sony Ericsson has been a partnership between the two and then Sony has bought out the partnership in full. In the meantime, Sony Mobile merged into Sony Nordic and Sony Xperia became part of Sony Electronics in corporate root structure. European software influence on Xperia has been fading away within years, they used to have big Swedish and eastern European outsourced teams that developed dozens of Xperia apps but those days are gone now.

Sony manufacturers its Xperia phones in their Sony Thailand factory for the whole global market. Xperia phone manufactured in China are only sold in China. And I don't think Foxconn has anything to do with it.

GOOD HARDWARE IS IMPORTANT BUT WITHOUT GOOD SOFTWARE IT'S AVERAGE AT BEST

It's a separate, unrelated company, developed from Sony and Ericsson's mobile division. It's one of the licensees of Sony's technology and branding for use in their mobile phones, made under license by Foxconn. You might be surprised that all Sony-branded phones mention "Evenwell" instead of "Sony Ericsson" as the developer in their default applications, unlike the Sony-branded mobile phones made until the Z5. It's proven from time to time that Sony Ericsson now uses "Sony Mobile" as their trade name.

Your opinion on R&D would make perfect sense for other Sony-branded products. Regardless, there aren't in-house products for any brand currently.
