Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra tipped to capture 24MP images by default

18 December 2023
Right now 12MP is the default resolution. Additional changes include the Photo Remaster tool that we recently saw on the Galaxy Book4.

At last!
Still waiting for the perfect substitute for my Mi Note 10! Its main cam is still great for fine detail!

Anonymous, 18 Dec 2023How other can do it at 12/12.5MP but samsung cannot? Lazy and overpriviledged employees, I guess.
Seriously, I see no other reason. GCam mod lays out so much detail from the native S23u hardware, that just proves that hardware is more than capable, it's the processing and guys behind it that stink at their job .

About damn time! They should've done this years ago. Xperias had 23MP years ago, even if it were way smaller pixels back then. But also Mi 11 with binned 108-to-27MP looked way sharper than the 12MP garbage in good light conditions. And nowadays, you can't do more than 12MP with a current gen Xperia and Apple had to be the first to "innovate" with a decent resolution option between both extremes...world upside down 🙄
At least samsung has to keep up now, but they should do 25MP (50/2) instead. Use that damn huge processing power of modern chipsets. No more excuses for lazy camera app and driver developers to not implement a proper pixel shifting or demosaicing algorithm. Look at what realme did with the 200MP sensor and near lossless 4x zoom, that's what we should expect from a properly designed piece of tech in 2023! But not just for the zoom, rather for the whole frame instead.

If they have to pick ideas from Apple, at least this is a good one. 24 mp can offer so much more detail than 12 mp, binned albeit.
It might fix Samsung's inability to offer naturally detailed instead of artificially oversharpened photos.

              Like iPhone? 😂

I know Samsung now uses AI Remosaicking to overcome it on their 200MP Chameleon Cell sensors, but a sensor that has 600MP and does 54-to-1 pixel binning is going to produce way too much noise and way too much artifacting to be viable, not to mention the processing time involved and the expensive assembly of so many pixels in such a relatively small space. Also, how do you assemble so many pixels in such a tight space without significant yield and defect issues? It just doesn't make any sense to me.

So in few years they can go back to dual cam setup (13mm + 23mm) and save money, periscopes are not cheap. Now multiply money saved by not using per million units.

Guess why Sammy Semicon works on 600MP? To allow to use 12MP portion at 7x digital zoom.

Why all this and not just use a 96MP Quad Bayer sensor instead of this 200MP Chameleon Cell nonsense if you're going to be doing 24MP?

They should keep both tbh. 12mp is good enough for me but 24 sounds reasonable too for some people

It's the first really interesting thing I see about the S23 Ultra, there hasn't been anything that caught my attention yet, 5x zoom? ok, cool, AI? Cool, brighter screen? Better late than never, right Samsung, change the charging speed? what for, right? improve the 10x sensor? oh, leave that alone, you don't even need to add more resolution, 10mp is fine, right Samsung, how about instead of copying some things from another company to bring "improvements", don't you start creating? It's not very difficult to bring innovation.
