When pointed to the moon, Samsung phone produces images that has same details as an okay telescope at 100x.
Yet completely fails to show Jupiter's storms and Saturn's Ring which is visible through the same telescope.
So yes, there's a lot of additional details added.

Don't know but I'll stick get the facts right and till it's out and I can get a real comparison between my S23 Ultra and S24 Ultra, for now I'll still stick to my S23 Ultra. Thank you. And I don't believe any news for now, let it come out first and I'll make comparison till then I can't tell if I'll go for or not.

0odle-noodle, 21 Dec 2023So it processes the details of low res photos for a better ... more"details it already knows are there"
That's the problem. Image processing algorithms can't reliably "know" if those details are supposed to be there or not. This is why it ends up adding the details of the actual moon onto a blurred version of the moon displayed on a computer monitor or any shiny patterned grey circle that mimics it.

This isn't just some HDR stacking, colour enhancement using semantic segmentation or context-aware noise reduction that other companies have been using, you're taking a low-resolution input and literally feeding it to the AI model that will always spit out a highly detailed moon image as an output *according to the specific reference images of the moon* that were used to train the model.

"how some people use photoshop to restore badly damaged vintage photos"
That's not a good example because, unlike the AI on a phone camera, those "restore" processes are done manually by a human hand, based on the information that they know for sure they exist - The AI doesn't know and that's why it gets tricked easily by showing it an intentionally blurred photo that shouldn't have any fine details.

It's not *entirely* fake for sure - after all, digital cameras use varying degrees of image manipulation after capturing light information, before delivering the final photos to the user - However, what Samsung (and Huawei) does in the moon mode dangerously steps on the line between "photo" and "AI-generated image", as it largely neglects the original characteristics of the input image and is designed to output a very similar image to the references every single time.

NOK6600, 19 Dec 2023200mp gimmick and useless... come from copycat brand... Copycat brand like all the Chinese phone makers?

Nick Tegrataker, 20 Dec 2023https://www.samsungmobilepress.com/feature-stories/how-sams... moreSo it processes the details of low res photos for a better shot, and doesn't plaster a picture of the moon on top of any white-ish circle it detects like you were saying it does. It's just reconstructing the image with details it already knows are there or can assume will be there, like how some people use photoshop to restore badly damaged vintage photos. No, it's not 100% genuine, but fake is not the word you should use to describe it.

If you own the s23 ultra. If you're a photographer looking for the ultimate blend of convenience and power, that one camera you happen to have with you at all times. Yet you haven't heard or are using a gcam port on it. Why the hell did you even buy it. There is no comparisson and no excuse. The default camera nay even the raw photos are a joke compared to the right gcam port. Samsung can do whatever ot wants, it is 10 years behind the quality you get with the proper port with the proper configs and libs. There is much to be worked on.

One of the diagrams confirms that their algorithms work on moon photos that have been "deliberately edited to be blurry" and somehow restore the craters that have completely disappeared from the original images (image stacking can only enhance the details already there). Another diagram suggests that the model has been trained in a way that the low-resolution input will be processed to look exactly like the "reference" moon photos, whose surface patterns will always remain the same as the moon only faces one direction to the Earth.

It doesn't straight-up try to copy and replace the captured image with a reference image, but it sure does add *a lot* of textures that never existed in the original image, because you can't "restore" lost details in any other way.

ReaLogic, 20 Dec 2023It was not debunked. It is in a sense "fake" as i... moreSo it wasn't faked, it was optimized to look better. Detail was enhanced to make the photo look better. When zooming in 100x, the resulting resolution is extremely low (less than 1MP) so a lot of detail is lost. The AI enhancement then analyzes and attempts to repair the detail that was lost, then upscales the image
Because of the low resolution of the actual zoom, it wouldn't matter if you used the real moon or an ipad of any resolution, its going to do the exact same thing.

Faking it would be just pasting a different image over the actual photo, or constructing a completely new moon. What the AI essentially does is restore the image taken, it does not create a new one.

S24U gains all the improvement from sammy, esp for it's camera performance, whereas S24/S24+ camera setup is measly, lagging behind from the competition.

0odle-noodle, 19 Dec 2023If you're talking about the moon photos, no. That was ... moreSamsung literally admitted that they are adding moon textures to an input image using an AI model specifically trained on moon photos only. Technically you can make any bright, splotchy grey circle look like the moon using the algorithms Samsung uses.

So no, the rumour was never "debunked", instead it was further reinforced and ultimately proven to be true by Samsung's official statement.

0odle-noodle, 19 Dec 2023If you're talking about the moon photos, no. That was ... moreIt was not debunked. It is in a sense "fake" as in more details were added than what was available. It shouldn't have more details than what's presented on an iPad screen.
It has been tested many times by many news authors and youtubers. Using a 0.3MP moon photo and blurring it, then taking it with Samsung phone, it becomes clear and sharp with details not in original photo. Though Samsung does use the blur photo as it's base, it does also add in details. This differs from noise reduction, stacking, HDR etc.

I prefer Sensor and lens do the job. No AI involved.

I wouldn't mind better AR pictures of the Moon, like 200mp one.
Even if its only a copy, you could have some original composition, maybe with some object before it...
Anyway after taking 100's of pictures, lvl of detail you can get with help of AI grows tremendously in any lighting, its like stacking part of picture separately.
Not that it will work like that, I just guess.

Wish they would drop the "more is better" and just put a 50mp 1" sensor in it and be done with it.
Shoot, my d-slr "only" has 26MP and it takes better photos than these things. Heck, one of my lenses costs more than these "flagship" phones anyway.
