I guess the entire photography world must be wrong, along with all the concepts around which cameras are built.

"focal length and aperture - just calculate its crop factor and with that, you have the sensor size."

    How exactly it is calculated?

All these people arguing over phone camera tech while my 2010 $100 camera still takes nicer pictures than a piece of glass as a camera lens.

There used to be time when Samsung would experiment new features on A7x A8x before folding them into S lineup. Anyone remember Galaxy A80, Galaxy Alpha, M40 etc. ??

DeepteshLovesTECH, 18 Jan 2024We can't compare old Mi11 Ultra's post processing... moreWhat I wanted to say is, Mi 11 Ultra (2020) still outshines S21 Ultra, S22 Ultra, S23 Ultra, etc. despite being more than 2 years old now. You may take any recent 48 MP / 50 MP by all rival makers, Apple, Google, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, etc. They all outshine Samsung's best cameraphone.

Also, Samsung should have better post-processing software engineering team compared to Xiaomi, so it is more obvious why 50 MP is sweet spot & Samsung is going against the river with their unnecessary 200 MP.

Ivo., 18 Jan 2024It's not the same - different pixel size, and differen... moreYou do not understand.

HP2 is going to grab same amount of light , no matter if you select 12.5, 50 or 200MP.
Pixels are still 0.6. Reading signal together do not turn them into 1.

Even 200MP from Bayer sensor is going to show less noise when you downscale to 20, 15, 12 or 8MP.
This is why nokia 808 (38MP effective) had 5MP as default. Same with Sony Z phones 20.7MP to 8MP.

sors, 18 Jan 2024If you want to have 3x to 10x lossless zoom quality with no... moreNobody is saying 8 cameras.

Lens for example 75-125mm surely costs more than using two cameras, 75mm and 125mm.This is why nobody else is willing to have it besides sony.

How long it has been since oppo said to be working on 80-200mm module? That was August 2021. If oppo was going to use, then it would be out already.

Have any idea of all engineering behind everything in there to move parts?
Linear motor of AF system, type of lens elements required for this type of lens?
Making that all in very limited space?

Much easier for sony to do it, because sony in 2005 bought Minolta, the company that invented the periscope tech. Minolta is also who created old A mount used by sony DSLR, before replaced by E mount/mirrorless.

Ivo., 18 Jan 2024A lot of people don't understand how pixel binning wor... more12MP 1/2" Bayer and 48MP quadbayer are going to give same.

When Sony created this tech, the purpose was to have dual exposure for single frame.
Half of pixels working at for example -0.5EV while half +0.5EV. This would replace multiframe exposure.
Nobody is taking advantage of this.

Also, quadbayer is very convenient to Sony Semicon because costs are much lower than Bayer sensor of same high resolution. Same filter above four instead of one, same micro, ens to cover 4 instead of one by one.

Nick Tegrataker, 18 Jan 2024"4 small pixels binned into 1 big pixel has much less ... moreA lot of people don't understand how pixel binning works, and how it's used to eliminate noise! Here is an example: 1 big pixel at ISO 400 gives the same result as 4 small pixels at ISO 100, but at ISO 100, there is no noise, so combining them together still has no noise. So, by using 4 small pixels you can eliminate the noise by 4 times! Combining 16 pixels together can eliminate the noise by 16 times, hence the 200 MP sensor!

"To put things into perspective, the Galaxy S24 Ultra has a 1/2.6" 115mm long telephoto camera with an f/3.4 lens compared to the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max's 1/3.06" 120mm with an f/2.8 lens. Comparing these two side by side would be quite interesting because one has a much bigger sensor, but the other has a brighter lens."
Not so hard to compare the specs. The effective lens diameter tells you how much light is captured from an object per exposure time in the center of the image, nothing else. The S24 Ultra has 5.47mm, the Pixel 7 Pro has 5.43mm, the 15 Pro Max has 5.59mm, the S21 Ultra has 6.24mm, the Huawei P60 Pro has 6.93mm and the Galaxy K Zoom has 6.98mm.
If the light conditions are perfect (base Iso), then the focal length is important for the amount of light you can capture from an object without overexposure. The S24 Ultra has 18.6mm, the Pixel 7 Pro has 19.0mm, the 15 Pro Max has 15.66mm, the S21 Ultra has 30.6mm and the Galaxy K Zoom has 44mm.

Anonymous, 17 Jan 2024Phone that is thinner cannot look thicker than thicker phone. You can make a phone feel and look thinner by rounding the edges. Mi Note 10 was a giant mass that completely dwarfed a lot of other "big" phones back then (nearly 1cm thick), but it didn't feel as chunky as the spec sheet suggested in hand because the side edges were heavily curved and tapered.

My question is why does Samsung themselves use their largest image sensor on their own phone and give us a taste of Samsung's post processing?
HP2 is Samsung's most advanced sensor - then I have no faith in Samsung's image sensor development because HP2 is garbage.
