OnePlus explains why it's only promising 5 years of Android updates, not more

Fellas fellas fellas, don't get manipulated by a billion$ company and become narrow sighted. Remember replaceable batteries are coming back (thanks to EU from the bottom of my heart), so oneplus bs'ing that "their battery won't last" well I'll replace it, it's not like only google/Samsung's battery will degrade, OnePlus' will too.
And with average use most battery lose significant charge after 2-3 years, so if I would use the same device for 7-8 years I'll change the battery at least twice. So which is cheaper to you 2 batteries or a new flagship phone? Ofcourse 2 batteries.
And that's what OnePlus doesn't want you to do. Remember, they are a for-profit company, they don't care about you only your money and they want it however they can.

Oneplus hardware support is one of the worst: I was quoted over 100 euro for the replacement of a volume button.

Typical OnePlus cope 🤡, in 3y from now phone manufacturers will widely support battery replacement as a result of regulations and laws. I'd rather replace the battery of my Samsung once for a couple tens of euros than buy a new phone because everything about it is old.

Shamrock Sean, 06 Feb 2024Screen burn, battery depletion and wear and tear there'... moreThe Note 10+ on using will be 5 years old by November this year. It's body is still in hear pristine condition, just micro scratches here and there. The OS is still performing greatly. Just battery life has dipped. With a new battery, I don't see any reason why it can't go more than extra 3 years. So, your logic is just not up to par.

lol. What a cop out. Based on that logic, why then provide updates at all? Just admit that you don’t have the resources nor margin to provide that lengthy software support since your main revenue is selling new phones.
Seriously, why did OnePlus even bother to put out a statement like this? It’s dumb. It’s like saying they are “smarter” than Google, the one who makes their OS. Besides, this is basically admitting their phones’ quality is sub par that they expect it to not perform well within 4 years.

Lack of support stopped me buying LG & htc, if they'd improved then maybe they'd stilll be around.
My (2015) S6 still works except for lagging.
My (2018) Note9 8GB| 512GB (+512GB microSD card) works great (except for gaming), the battery can still last a day but now needs replacing, & a new charging port.
I store & play music via 3.5mm jack to RCA plugs into my HiFi amp.
Recent flagships should easily last 10 years, it's best they're used/ repurposed or sold/ passed on.

OnePlus is not right here. 7 years is recommended. I used my iPhone SE for a long time. It might not have the latest camera processing and OS features but with the basic OS it did its job as a spare / daily phone. The user could replace the battery for a small fee or even self replace at home. They could provide the basic and essentials of the latest OS without much bloat that could slow the „old“ phone down.

I agree with OnePlus, updating the system for four years and five years of security updates is more than enough, and everyone says that OnePlus wants to make a profit. This is not true. I had an iPhone 12 Pro Max, now in the ios 17 update, the iPhone is unusually slow and heavy in response, unlike the iPhone. 14, I agree with OnePlus that their phone experience is very smooth

Ouifuf, 07 Feb 2024Completely agree. Never liked the over reliance on software... moreWow I am surprised that idiots like you exists. ARM SOC's are much powerful than from the last decade and change the battery (any other spare part) as Samsung and Google provides them till official life cycle of the products. Not to forget about the environment gain from longer software support.
Then comes the resale value. Phones with updated software is not depreciated as mush as obsolete ones.
I personally use a Pixel 3 and it is ample fast without slow downs proving that SOC's aren't the limiting factor anymore. I wish it got more updates and I am planning to buy a new one due to it not receiving updates. And regarding vendor support (Qualcomm, Mediatek), I think they will be required to comply if they don't want to face scrutiny from Law makers and phone OEM's.
Anyway these are my opinions and yours might vary.
Peace

Having both the Pixel 8 Pro & the S24 Ultra I still think 5 years is more than enough for any phone,7 years is just a Sales Gimmick.
Also knowing how Google like to suddenly pull the plug on things, will they still be making phones in 2030/31 who knows.
So just think 7 year's form now how bad these phone will be batteries will have to be replaced, storage speed will degrade down to a crawl, performance will be absolutely terrible, even a cheap $100+ smartphone from 2031 will wipe the floor with the Pixel 8 & S24 Ultra.
My Wife likes to keep hold of her phones for a long time she currently rocking a Samsung A52 which she had for nearly 3 years now, she be upgrading it this year probably to a A55, because after nearly 3 years the phone has seen better day's.

You can simply go to the nearest Service Center to change the old battery to a new one.
Samsung ang Google will not offer such a thing if they are not ready for this... Especially for the phone's components after 7 years.

I'm not keeping a phone for 5-7 years anyway. I'm an android enthusiast and I want to try new phones every couple of years. (okay it's been annually for a while) I am going to try to move from the galaxy Ultra line to the 12R this year if at&t authorizes it.

For anyone who are confused and thought that Oneplus Just want a profit, Your Phone Will Lag After 4-5 Years Of Software update (For now) If it Uses The newest Software.
