It all has to do with sandwiches.

Using a sandwich as a comparation is not appreciated. It is totally different. It is better to compare car and smartphone.
Talking about the battery, this is one of everlasting issues in the phone world, even from the first ever mobile phone. The life of battery is mostly depend on the user of phone.

From this point, I assume that Oneplus, in particular, just want to produce the new up-to-date phones (well every month if they can, just remind that there is companies that produce the new phone every six month). So they may predict that their beloved phone will be down in a short time.

bad excuse, people change batteries and buy old flagships

not only the battery, but also the storage will detorate over time.

you can't replace the storage without changing the whole motherboard - which wouldn't be cheap to say the least.

at that point you might as well get a new phone.

android is dead , in sg trial , it will stop side loading , that mean
        no customization ,
        years of update no point!!
what make android great is side loading and customization
might as well move to apple eco system

Furkan, 07 Feb 2024lol you can change a new battery and it's cheapOriginal battery not always available especially for the chinese phones. Third party batteries usually bad as sh**.

Personally I think the 7-year software is a gimmick but only time will tell if they stick to it.

As for OnePlus throwing in their two cents, I find a little ironic and hilarious considering their issues with their own software and not supporting phones past two or three update Cycles and being slow to keep up with security updates monthly. I've had 1+ 1, 3, 5T, 8T and 10T and I left all of them due to software issues and one plus is inability to squash the bugs and the slowness at doing it.

I know one plus has gotten better over the years so I don't want to knock their progress but I think they're getting a little too arrogant thinking they've reached the Pinnacle and have something against Apple and Samsung.

I used Redmi note 5 AI for 5 years and probably would of used it longer if it would of had better chip for performance. It's still working and nothing really wrong with it other then being slow. But then again it was low end budget and slow even when i got it.

Just for you information the people who comment or talk about phones around the world is probably less then 1'% of total market of phones in use now. There are people in my country who used Nokia 6110 for over 10-15 years to a point the 3G support was ended.

Also that Europe is pushing phone brands to make new phones easy to repair and there is also a lot of people who use what ever phone as long as it last and mostly over 5 years. If they can change battery and that give them more 5 years then they do it over buying new phone.

Anonymous, 07 Feb 2024Thats what you get for using chinese phone, not being usabl... moreChinese phones are fine after 5 years because they are usually still on their 2nd or 3rd year update and those updates are usually very good. Your ignorance shows you've never used a Chinese phone.

The most problems I've had are iPhones past the 2nd year update. The software deteriorated to the point that the phone was completely unusable. I, personally, do not know why people put up with using old iPhones. The battery only last for half a day and the UI is slow as molasses. Most iPhone owners I know upgrade to a new iPhone every 2 years.

That would explain why people still use Samsung or iPhone even after 5 years, and nobody want to use chinese phone after 5 years.

I only shared my own experience. In fact, i have not seen people using their 5 years old (or older) chinese phone. Samsung and iPhone are the two brands i saw from people that still use their 5 years old phone.

Yes, companies should not over-promise on updates. 4 years of good updates is better than 7 years of updates that make the phone progressively worse.

Flagship units, with their powerful specs used, seems viable for 7 years of upgrade. Most of the affluents would still trade or replace their units if they want to even on annual basis due to their purse depth for some new/innovative features. Midrange or entry smartphones however, could be until to 5 years or less since they're happy what they have right now and probably buy if they lost or broke the units, so new phone, new firmware version. Moreso the hardware could suffer in performance like lagging or slow response.

I sort of read what Kinder Liu was saying as a bit of a jab to perhaps Samsung/Google. Most of us have had the feeling that with each new update sometimes the phone gets a bit more laggy, battery life is not quite as good, camera is not quite as good etc...

I am more than happy with 4 years of software so long as each version doesn't make the phone worse in some ways. Security updates are provided for 5 years. Honestly after 5 years I am sure most will be looking at a new phone anyway, if not you can always still use the phone as a phone and not using banking apps etc... due to the lack of security updates.

People like to blame the "greedy" companies but we are the ones that keep buying their products year after year.

I am looking forward to getting my Oneplus 12 tomorrow, I will be selling my S23+ to cover 75% of the cost.

And then there's the question of how long Qualcomm and MediaTek officially support their SoCs. Even Fairphone switched to the enterprise IoT version of the Snapdragon SoC because it gives much longer support than the standard general consumer mobile SoC.
