OnePlus explains why it's only promising 5 years of Android updates, not more

And then there's the question of how long Qualcomm and MediaTek officially support their SoCs. Even Fairphone switched to the enterprise IoT version of the Snapdragon SoC because it gives much longer support than the standard general consumer mobile SoC.

If OnePlus don't want to upgrade the phone for 7 years, they should consider lessening the retail price of their phones.

I am honestly happy with the longer software support, whether it be 5 or 7 years. This means that the custom ROM community will also thrive for much MUCH longer. And it will cut definitely cut developers some slack in ensuring compatibility with newer Android versions.
I know some old phones whose ROM community only lasted for 3 to 4 Android generations before giving up due to limited compatibility and stability.

If hardware support is still available for 7 years, then the revised software update schedule would still make sense, as many phones still remain in use as 'hand-me-downs'.

I understand the point they're trying to make, but I still feel like the decision was ultimately made to shrug off responsibility on their part. If Google can, then most other OEMs can.
And besides, most modern SoCs, whether midrange or flagship, are much much faster than their midrange and flagship counterparts from a few years ago. I'm sure that's one of the reasons behind longer software support. And also, I don't firmly believe in Moore's law anymore, or at least the practical significance behind it.

what a terrible excuse, even if one was to upgrade in 3 years about (more than 50% people likely to do so) and sold the handset as second hand, the S24Ultra would be worth a lot more than the Oneplus even after discounting the original price differencs in percentages.
Simple fact, if I was buying a 3 year old handset it is good to know I will still get another 4 years of Software update and I would be more inclined to pay more (better resale value for the S24U) than the Oneplus which only have 2 years left.
Besides the Guy forgot to mention one can just change a battery at anytime if buying the phone after 3 years and you got another new fone basically that would last for another 4 years Vs 2 years!
Another reason why iPhone has better resale value in the past but I think the 7 years Software support will be more than official iphnoes support(one of the reason why Iphones has better resale value) but now with 7 yrs support Samsung resale value should increase for sure; just simple fatcs.
That Guy's just full of BS and can eat his moldy sandwich while people can just change a new battery and have a near new fone (if original look after it and use a case & screen protector) for another 4 years which is more than nearly all new Midtiers phone on the market then 🤣🤣🤣

The thing is that their phones' hardware are more than capable enough to last for several years (excluding battery of course but there's likely solutions for that), so that sandwich analogy doesn't really make sense.
Personally, I think that 4 years of Android software updates is good enough, but they should atleast consider extending security updates since I believe that matters more and they have the capablities of doing that.

Simple as that.
This is just a confession from OnePlus, that its phone has garbage quality and only lasts 4 years maximum.

After 2 years, an S24U buyer will be lusting for an S26U. And by year 5, user will probably have a hard time looking for parts. Just saying.

Completely agree. Never liked the over reliance on software support. There's a reason it hasn't been a thing till now. Also from a business pov, why tf would you give customers more of a reason not to buy a new phone. If they aren't, that's means they're making their money in a new, less than ideal way like sub services

"Imagine your phone is a sandwich"
Bro, a phone is a phone. A food is a food. Food can be moldy and dont need software support, while phone's hardware lasts for years and secure if it comes with long software support.

And Samsung's 7 year updates will only make sense if, 7 years after s24 release, spare parts would still be purchasable. Or that Samsung didn't slow down their s24 lineup lmao.

Nick Tegrataker, 07 Feb 2024Also defending a multi-billion company like what you'r... moreAnd how much this would cost ?
That is the issue. It is no surprise OP finances are tied to oppo , but realme is not.
Volume sold is much smaller than even realme (probably no more than 1/5) , also most phones sold are Nord. Not much revenue.
Apple started with this because older iphones were still made and sold even with 3-4 gens ahead was current phone. Production of iphone 6 stopped in 2018.
Apple makes good money out of old phones, also money with iOS.
Android gives money to google only. Not to samsung, oppo, asus, meizu, htc ...
To those that make 60, 80, 100 or 200 billion dollars by selling phones, that is easy.
To those making 1, 2 or 3 billion?
HMD promised 3 years and monthly patches back in 2017. Not doing that anymore.
Soon, other will be doing same.
Motorola used to give 2 android to G series, now just 1. And how many moto are running android 14 already?
Anyway, samsung was selling more when their support was the worst.
Now, not even a low end like A14 can sell as much as S4 (80 million units), despite earning 3-4 android versions.
