Yeah, this is absolute bs. I still have my lovely OnePlus 7 pro, which is arguably, the last real OnePlus phone and not just an OPPO shell.
No notch, absolutely gorgeous screen, buttery smooth and zero lag. Sure, battery life is not ideal now. However, it's far from extreme bad or unusable. I'll probably get the iPhone 16 pro later this year anyway. It's just sad what OPPO did to the OP band. Very stupid as well.

Indeed, it is a very difficult step for Chinese phone devices to support updates for 7 years. I see that OnePlus, Xiaomi, and all Chinese companies in general are unable to do so for this period. But on the other hand, I am confident that Samsung, Google, and Apple, even if they change their policy to 7 years, will be able to make the experience stable throughout the seven years. Also, Samsung and Google batteries will last a long time because they do not support very high speeds that affect battery life. The maximum speed that Samsung reached was 45. Watts in the S2 Ultra device, and the device charges in one hour, and you will spend two full days as a normal user, and if you are an average user, it will take you a full day with a few hours, and I see that even if you are a heavy user, it is impossible to reach the point where you will charge your phone every day or twice every day. So yes, I think the life of the device will be really long. Basically, Samsung and iPhone reduce the processor speed in order to maintain its performance for a longer period. We see that every year Samsung makes special Snapdragon processors for it. It is assumed that the hardware and specifications provide this phone with the best experience, but in one way or another, Samsung withholds this increase for the benefit of the system and the life span of the device (if we do not believe this, then you should ask anyone Here I am using a Samsung device with a modified system version. Believe me, the difference is very big) but despite this, I think it is a very wonderful idea and I see that Samsung devices actually last a long time.

It's not like they are being subjected to bans by foreign governments and prohibited from accessing source codes of newer versions of Android or anything, so if they don't want to provide updates for more than 5 years the best they could've done is to simply shut up about it instead of making up stupid excuses and acting like a total hypocrite.

Surely by his own argument, not only should Oneplus make sure the software is great for that amount of time but the device to physical be able to endure that amount of use, i.e. durability and battery health. Basically what the argument made is, doesn't matter after 5 years because people would have long smashed their devices... I don't think I've ever been more greatful Carl Pei left.

Anonymous, 06 Feb 2024Let's see how it works. You buy phone like S24 Ult... moreAfter 3 years the price of phone drops 60% from the initial price.

So, it is $560 of S24 Ultra in 2027 (with 4 years OS upgrades left)

On other side, 3 years old chinese flagship (with 1 OS upgrade left) gives lesser value.

7 years of updates is a marketing gimmick just like 200 megapixels cameras. It sounds good but in reality it doesn't work.

Anonymous, 06 Feb 2024Except on iPhones and Google Pixels. They can do that because they literally make (at least Apple does; Google outsources Tensor to Samsung) their own chipsets and have all the means in the world to code, test, and refine their software updates.

Compared to phones running Qualcomm and especially Mediatek CPUs that cut off the required blobs, drivers, and optimisation supoort for chips after about 3 years to force OEMs and people to buy new phones with newer chipsets.

sors, 06 Feb 2024Seems like apple bread is different than your bread! becaus... moreApple gives whatever the new iOS will have for every device they sold(except for ones that need some different hardware) but Samsung is saying it's 2 yo Flagship (s22u) is not gonna get the ai things, and google is worse, not only they lock most of it's features for almost every region, they don't give some of the features for their base model (p8) without any logical explanations.
So I agree with OnePlus, it seems apple bread is indeed different from Samsung/google.

People paying 7/7 of the price of phone not 4/7 of the price.

If the future Galaxy A55 (2024) would give the user 7 years of soffware upgrades, then Oneplus should sell its phone 4/7 of the price of Galaxy A55.

Well... Some people seems to like eating mouldy bread, so let them have a feast.

Irony aside, the whole argument is solid. People will pay more for these years of updates, because they are not free, but will a 7 years old flagship phone keep its performance after so long time? Obviously not.

People also forget that sensible components, like battery, USB-C port and camera shutters has a lifetime. In 7 years, you won't replace the camera module if it gets busted. Same goes for battery, which might stop being manufactured during these 7 years. I once asked Samsung Repair Center about camera modules and screen for an eventual repair of my Galaxy Note 10. They don't have any in stock since mid 2023, at least in my country.

" because the rest of your experience with the phone is terrible"

I have seen quite many people still use their 5 years old iphone and samsung, but not with old chinese phone.

Looks like Oneplus admits its phone has lower build and lower software quality than Samsung and iPhone.

I can see their point here, but what about resale value? That also matters. At least Samsung's trying to make use of that 7 years by making their phones more repairable.

The real issue is why the rest of the android OEM industry isn't stepping up to give 5 years software support, at least Oneplus are being transparent

4 years of OS upgrades in 2024 ?? What is this ?? Looks like OnePlus stucks in 2021.

4 years OS upgrades on flagship only okay if the new flagship only costs 4/7 of the initial price or the competitor's phone.

As of now majority of middle class is under 800.000 score while flagship is over 2 million and with new chips these get even more far away.

Just for example think of how many phones are out there with SD695 that is as much used chip like 6 years ago SD625. While phones even now as now come with SD695 still and that is bottom of the middle class price range chip basically

In plain words, a phone's hardware will be unusable as a flagship grade just after 4 years, the performance will turn slower, the battery will be severely deteriorated, and it's possible that the phone itself doesn't last that long because of it's build quality. So 7 years of support is pointless. After that many years, the user will already be on their 3rd phone or so, because most users just get bored of having the same device for long so they upgrade a lot sooner than that 7 years period

So while on paper, it sounds good, in practice no one will actually require it
