By the wayy you can work even 10 years with your phone but once you cant update and upgrade your hardware soon or later your even once a flagship grade device will be completely useless.

Look for example back in 2017 when Iphone 8 was new thing something like Clash of lords were a lagg free game which worked flavlesly with Iphone 8.
But after 7 years of constant updates where game evolved and comes with current era and age same phone which run same game without nay kind issues now struggling a lot with same game unable to run it without laggs bugs and connection issues.

SpiritWolf, 06 Feb 2024The thing is, that phone technology is near pinnacle anyway... moreWell friend.
On one hand you are right on other not.
    Let me explain please.
Its fine your phone is happily working after 4 years but its geting old and retired soon or later and in worse scenario you will either have to repair your old phone or buy new and your old phone will have zero resale value after 4-5 years,

On the other hand no company gives you more than 2 years of warranty and so is no point to keep your phone any longer because if something happens usually the reopairs are very costly in worse scenarios new phone is cheaper than fixing old device.

So when your device bought on monthly contract from your carrier (or at least i work this way) is paid yiu cann sell your old device when it have still decent value and buy something new.

walkman8, 06 Feb 2024It's not about holding on to a phone for 7 years, it&#... more2-3 years of updates are more than enough. Nobody will walk with laggy buggy phone where you still can update your games and other apps but you cant update your hardware.
So yes your comment was very exact and precise.
Likely even with 5 or 7 years of software update no company is ging to give you 5-7 years of complete warranty.

Xypleth, 07 Feb 2024OnePlus phones just are not very prestigious/high-quality. ... moreBro apart Vertu brand which one is quality???
And please dont tell me Samsung or Apple because you will make evrybody laugh like a mad crazy insane weirdo.

I mean, it could have made sense, if someone else was doing it but Google (who develop Android) is providing 7 years of support. I mean, they must have some kind of idea about how their OS is going to he in the next 7 years.
*Note: 7 is ridiculous for OS updates though. Yes, security updates upto 6 years and OS updates for 5 years it the right thing to do. (for resale after 4th update)

OnePlus phones just are not very prestigious/high-quality. It had a good reputation and popularity at first, and I owned and enjoyed OnePlus 3T, bought it as new, but it got old and unusable very quickly, because the technology wasn't cutting-edge, and many features were worse than "top dogs" 1-4 years earlier.
It takes a lot of high-end technology, to create a phone, that has hardware that can last many years of software updates. So far only Apple, maybe Samsung flagships are at that level.

I believe it's about the prestige and longevity of the brand. If a brand values itself (and it's product) high enough, that the product lasts a very long time, then it attracts customers that purchase the phone, as a long term investment, and it also attracts second-hand buyers, that end up using the "ecosystem", and later-on leases or purchases brand-new devices. It can be clearly seen with Apple devices, they're still very good after 5+ years, in many cases even 10+ years, and it attracts a lot of people to Apple products, because it's worth buying and using, allowing the brand to sell it's devices for more, and keep it's customers for a long time.

                            It makes some sense.

Polishing the experience takes resources, and I mean, they are not one of the most selling brands in android.
In 5 years a lot of people will have already moved on to a new device. So what are they working for?

"because the rest of your experience with the phone is terrible" -- then why do these manufacturers release expensive flagship every year if they cannot provide longer upgrades? Oh yeah, they know people will tend not to upgrade their phone to latest flagships if they provide 7 long years of OS upgrades, which may affect their sales and directly their profit.

Please don't fool people. Phones have now reached it max peak. 12-16 Gigs of RAM, capable triple camera sensors, high resolution screen available, latest connectivity on flagships can easily support longer OS upgrades without degraging the devices performance.

Andriod smartphone companies paying for each major updates. The more updates they giving, it just means you paying for more. The question here, do you plan to use the phone for more than 5 years? If not, why pay more?

I've been using my desktop for almost 10 years now, and it has exactly the same performance as the day it was built. By your logic it should be running at 25% of what it was originally capable.

The "age" of the code, whatever that means, has absolutely zero effect on its function or hardware it's running on. If it's better optimized, it might stress the battery a bit less. Aging has zero measurable effect on all components except for the battery and the flash memory.
