I've been using my desktop for almost 10 years now, and it has exactly the same performance as the day it was built. By your logic it should be running at 25% of what it was originally capable.
The "age" of the code, whatever that means, has absolutely zero effect on its function or hardware it's running on. If it's better optimized, it might stress the battery a bit less. Aging has zero measurable effect on all components except for the battery and the flash memory.

What degrades exactly? I have a 18 yo working PC which has the exact same performance as it did when I bought it. In fact Windows 10 runs beautifully on it.

I think 4 OS upgrades are the gold standard. Anything less I would be wanting more, anything more and I'd feel like I'm throwing away something good when upgrading :D.

Cpu and ram are static benchmarks. Better performant hardware will come out, the old cpu may struggle to run newer code suited to higher perf HW, but they do not wilt like a flower. You can find lightweight alternatives too.
The scenario I am describing happens to computers about every 7-10 years.
The battery does weaken, but it can be replaced, whether tough or easy.
Stop praising the culture of ewaste!

So, OnePlus admits they don't even have spare parts for their phones? As crucial as the battery?
LOL, what an embarrassment.

Aslong as they make the bootloader easy to unlock, then i'm okay with it as i always go custom rom after official support ends.
I avoid samsung due to knox that is permanently tripped & disable some functionality.

5yrs is sufficient, Vivo will have to do better and match OP by increasing it by 1 year.
(Currently only 4 Year Security Update & 3 Year Major OS Update)

Dex, 07 Feb 2024I'm confused by amount of people blaming Oneplus for b... moreMan, that's why they're giving 7 years update. The whole article was about that, no use of giving such long updates when much of the phone's hardware becomes super outdated. On top of that, why would Google give updates for phones which are only used by less than 1% of the people, just makes no sense. They're not being greedy by not providing 'unlimited software updates,' they're being practical

i had a phone for 3 years that battery stayed above 90% somewhere around 95 and it never lost performance, just take good care of your phone and don't be a bad user with your phone so their point saying that 5 years your battery will die when it infact will not, i also still have an iphone 6 from 2016 that still runs fine even after 8 years and the battery just got to 74% so i don't get their statement at least for me.
7 years of update is good and i would keep my phone for 7 years if i don't feel the need to switch over anyways.

I think this is fair. 5 years of updates is plenty. I mean a lot of people get caught up in a hype and upgrade their phone every year, let alone keep a phone for 5 years. And they are right, a phone will weaken heavily after 5 years of use, no point polishing it with new software when it can barely handle the current one.
And people saying OnePlus are greedy, really? They charge less for their phones than the likes of Samsung. The same Samsung that charge you premium prices for a flagship that doesn't even include a charging plug and a case.

5 years is software support is sufficient. 7 years is pointless. Phone, laptop, PC hardware degrade to almost half of its original capacity after 4 years. Newer code actually stresses already weakened hardware.
People commenting here behaving like once software updates stop, their phone is going to shutdown permanently. Your device can operate fully functional even after software updates stop. My phone's updates stopped 2 years ago and it's still running very smooth. Only problem for me is lower storage compared to today's standard (only 64GB).

Shellyman Studios, 07 Feb 2024I think 5 years is reasonable. I mean who's sticking w... moreThe only people that do this are either very poor (understandably, but they likely wouldn't have purchased a flagship device) or are not really using their phone to the most of its capabilities. They are just basic users who aren't "into phones" and likely don't even think about or concern themselves with Security Updates. They add no actual usability value, whereas the OS updates can add value (and can make the phone slower as it wasn't exactly meant for the older technology).

When it was released nearly 6 years ago the Poco F1 (Snapdragon 845) made a splash to rave reviews as the "flagship killer". Do people care if it still received updates today? I think it's not so much about 5- or 7-year support, or the battery. It's that after 5 years, there would have been 5 newer generations that the phone has become irrelevant.

what about the hardware especially camera and rom, ram, it's wifi capability, Bluetooth version and wireless headphone part, literary everything One plus has consolidated it's position Samsung, Google, Apple can't dismantle it.
