OnePlus explains why it's only promising 5 years of Android updates, not more

I was one of the previous owner of P30 Pro since its first launch March 2019 and recently switched to S24 Ultra simply just because P30 Pro does not support software update anymore. Regarding the battery health, I always change the battery annually at Huawei Service Center. It only costs around USD 15 - 20 per change and the phone lasted almost like a brand new.

Well, maybe the sandwich is in his head. Let's be clear, I'm using a mi 8 with pixelexperience and it's fantastic, I just needed to change the battery last year, and I believed that it gonna last at least another year. I would say: "why he is no clear and say is all for the money", but looking at the comments, and knowing what is happening right now, clearly there's people gullible enough to believe that they are "looking out for the consumer".
If you are one of the people that believes this statement make sense, I just wanna say this to you: you can change your phone every year. or every 6 months, I don't care, no one cares, but you are part of a bigger problem, nobody prohibits that you buy a phone every week if you desire, but this big companies are limiting and prohibiting to the users who didn't need that extra megapixel to use "their" phones for more time that they wanted. In the recent years our freedoms are being limited by this companies, and we are allowing this. Intrusive publicity, forced updates that break or remove functionalities, publicity in "premium" accounts and now demands and legally actions to prevent electronics to function properly for more than 3 years. And people applauding this terrible actions. The future looks terrible, unauthorized publicity in phones, tvs, refrigerators. We gonna need to change our washing machine every 2 years because an update that blocks the machine for "security reasons, and the wellfare of the user", you call for service and you are welcomed to an IA that doesn't understand your accent. This future is looking worst than any post apocalyptic nightmare.

It gives people reliability and allow people to have their phone for longer period of time with latest security updates.
You know, number of people keep their phone with themself for many years.
I recently gifted my 6/7 years old Mi A1 to a person in need and it's battery was giving me a whole day backUp.
So what's wrong in having latest os and security patches for that period of time mate ‼️

lewein, 07 Feb 2024bad analogy, you cannot compare phones from 6-7 years ago w... moreYes you can because the same principle works. 7 years ago the top end hardware was leaps and bounds above hardware from 7 years before that, like how it is in most industries.
In the last 3 years even things like ray tracing hardware has become the norm in flagship chips and with it comes software that will only work with certain generations of hardware (take current RTX gpus, they dont work with direct9 or 10 games so have issues rendering them, hardware is simply not made to work with those standards anymore).
Just seems like you dont really understand the concepts behind technology or how software works (i usually get taught coding and software development by my lead web dev mate and my 1st exs dad who was a software engineer for citi bank when i used to talk to him who was developing software since the 80s).

Granted, a battery swap would do it but OnePlus doesn't have as many official services to make battery swaps happen that easily compared to Apple, Google, and Samsung.

lewein, 07 Feb 2024I wanted to buy an OP, now i will not, it's not becaus... moreNothing to do with greed at all, probably based off peoples actual purchasing habits and the data from that. Most people get contracted phones (in the uk), they are 2-3 year contracts so MOST people upgrade their devices once the contract is up for renewal.
Also when a phone is upgraded to a new android version A. most brands already have an iteration of a feature the new standardised android brought in (like ultraHDR or whatever to the gallery app) and B. doesnt delete all previous stored data so will start getting bloated at some point and sluggish (plus no hardware is staying healthy/not degrading in that amount of years and the new software WILL affect the hardware (most of the time because the software is optermised for newer hardware).
I wish they'd atleast do 5 years for both updates and security, that would atleast please most people (and the ones that keep their phones for 5 years or slightly longer which is about 5% of the public if that), tbf its easy too install custom roms and offical security patches worst case.
Plus its clear samsung is starting to monopolise the android eco system with google, linked at the hip now with all the deals they do so isnt suprising that google (who use samsung manufactured chips) and samsung BOTH now offer 7 years from their current flagships and onwards, clearly working closely even on the software front (and they can because they are FAR FAR richer than all other android brands.)

Here, a 4 year and 6 month old OnePlus 7 running smoothly on Pixel Experience 13 has been used since July 2019. OnePlus is a loser brand, cheap knockoff or hybrid of Oppo and Apple. They cannot provide software on time, they cannot fix major bugs in their current phones, and they do not have service centers in every tier-2 and tier-3 city like Samsung does.
Even so, I can accept their incompetent to offer seven (7) operating system updates due to self-interest, but why are they still able to provide only four? Given how closely their Color OS fork builds resemble iOS, they could have provided 5 OS updates, just like Apple. Moreover, they could come up with the pledge to provide updates to all now-supported devices—from the newest to the oldest—on the vary same day. But they simply can't.
How typical of OnePlus!

Furkin, 07 Feb 2024If you can get OP units to last that long, you're luck... moreMay I suggest you Poco M6 5G?
Its the cheapest 5G phone at the moment, not even close to $200, and RAM goes as high as 8GB.
Plus, it ticks all your boxes: Dual SIM, Memory card slot is separate, 3.5mm jack is there.
Downsides are that it has a 720p screen, but its sufficient sometimes. You can choose M6 Pro, if FullHD screen is so needed.

I've literally changed my Samsung galaxy S23 ultra CSC, to stop updates, still running UI 5.1...all apps get the security patches from playstore , specially bank apps ...not every Samsung update is good for your phone, sometimes they use as a "test" for upcoming devices
...and the thing just gets slow, other times cameras gets blurry...as of it now I planning to make a review actually of UI 5 Vs 6 .
