Sam N8 808 owner, 07 Feb 2024I've used my Redmi 2 Prime much beyond its accepted ag... moreWhat is this dumb answer, the chipsets oneplus use (SD8 series) is no way inferior to the one that google pixel uses(tensor) and if tensor can handle 7 year old android, one plus's oxygen OS too can as the core of the software will be the same except for few added features and skin of One plus. So it is basically greed of one plus nothing else.

    Real reasons:

    1. cuts into our profits
    2. We don't have that big software division , we couldn't do that
    3. People like new shiny things , so we sell them new stuff every year

If you can get OP units to last that long, you're lucky.
As a disabled person, I have to absolutely depend on my equipment.
Out 3 units, non lasted that long before different things went wrong with each kit.
      5 years ? I reckon 2 at best.

I'm now after a phone with dual physical SIM slots and an SD slot.
I can't afford the best (whatever that is today), and don't want the worse.

I don't have the luxury of being able to send it away for failures.

        Translation: because they’re greedy bastards

I've used my Redmi 2 Prime much beyond its accepted age at uptill 2019, almost 7 years.
My LG G8x is also going good at 4~ years and I plan big time use.

Still, I agree with Oneplus here.

You guys need to understand that Android is not in the control of Oneplus. They can't make commitments that their present hardware will flawlessly run Android 18 or 19 (version), alongwith their skin on top. Can you promise the same?
Google can do because hardware and software and the skin on it, is all theirs.

Making a promise during a sale and then not being able to follow up is cheating... So they're right here.

Why should they care for resale value? Their priority is selling you/us current tech , with current software , adequate hardware and capabilities... Once you buy the product ..they have obligation for device guarantee 2-3 years whatever they offer ...repairs/replacements/end of cycle life battery is up to the owner of the device , meanwhile internet , ai ,updates , apps grow day by day ... Those are not bound by any form of contract and are not any company obligations to do more than they deem worth... 3-5 years is awesome and Wellcome but it was never mandatory it's just good will that consumers took for granted and now are turning it against those companies... Most of the people complaining will be switching device in a year or 2 ...

This is most stupid explanation i have ever read

Oneplus reminds me of LG. Just don’t know when they will close up shop and abandon all updates or services to their products.

I changed my S20FE 5G battery after 2 years. It's still working like a new phone. So if OEM provides extra support it'll survive another 2years. Because none buys a new phone in less than 4 years. Still for the price, 5years of updates is good enough for OnePlus.

Changing battery via a third party is not that hard. And 7 years of OS updates will really help the phone when considering the resale market. The used market with Samsung and Google will be better considered. This explanation by the CEO is naive imo

                            Wwhat ?? Lolzzz

Their intention seems bad. I believe they feel people are dumb that they didn't listen both Google and Samsung's 7 years of spare parts availablity as well with patches and os updates.

                            OnePlus this was childish 😵‍💫🥲

If google really means it, they should release their pixels every 7 years and make the repair fee during these 7 years cost 0. That's why the 7 years is just a promotion trap

You can change your battery, spare parts will be available, and repair shops will change them for you if you can't be bothered to get a DIY kit.

7 years OS update is not just keeping your phone fresh until the battery is weak in 4 years or a part is damaged in less than 5 years. It's about repairability.
Repairability and making spare parts available to consumers change the horizon of the smartphone market when a phone manufacturer is invested in making parts available it becomes clear that you need more than 4 or 5 years of OS update.

Anonymous, 07 Feb 2024OnePlus fans: "4 years OS upgrades is enough, because... more7 Years updates is better yes, so what?

Those who actually care are a minority in the tech world, the same minority who wants to be informed about everything on a spec-sheet.

The majority of users will switch phones every 2-4 years no matter if you have 7 years of updates.

Or why else do you think every new iPhone or the next Galaxy S will sell like crazy unless people will become less accepting of the status quo?

Those two brands have one particular thing in common, perceived market value.
Are those phones worth 1000€/$+? Hell no. Does the majority of less tech savvy users thinks so? Yes.
Why? Because of brand name and recognition and with it value people and the market project into it.

It is the same reason why those phones hold up better in the used market. Not because they are better but because people think they are.

On a technical basis, nearly every chinese high-end phone is equal or better than iPhones or Galaxy S devices in most aspects, but they simply do not have the same mindshare and perceived value, so sell less globally.

If i have a choice of a better screen, better cameras (or everything at least equal), and a design i subjectively like more all at a cheaper price with a chinese high-end phone over longer updates with a Samsung or iPhone, which are at best equal in those other aspects, i rather have the chinese phone that actually gets me what i want at half to maybe 2/3 of the cost of iPhones and Galaxy S devices.

Google's 7 years "promise" is more like a compensation/focus shift for their bad battery. You will be lucky if the battery in your pixel phone can survive 7 years..
