They're not going to be hitting the market anytime soon, though.

Anonymous, 08 Feb 2024They will call it innovationIndeed. It's sad.
I was sitting yesterday in a plane and a guy next to me had pixel, me with my fold and the iPhone guy was feeling pretty damn curious and outdated. Was like one of those cheeky Google ads that I never believe but it actually was funny.

    Flip
    Fold 2
    Fold 3
    Flip 4
    Fold 5.
And I see then more and more.
Guess opinions differ, but sales do not.

      They will call it innovation

It will be Flip but certainly a Flop phone. People avoid flip and fold since they package lower end processors and lower end camera modules than what is available in the normal flagship ones. iPhone will push it's Pro Max features into the plausible flip/fold ones and making customers to pay a big fortune to own it! Already iPhone is declining in sales, this will further dent it's market share.

There's a wrong way of doing things and then there's an Apple way of doing it. The best way.

Honor Magic V2 shows a foldable can be thinner than an iPhone while packing a big battery with minimal crease so current tech isn't the limitation. It's that consumers are only willing to spend 1K €/$ for a flip style foldable and Apple isn't willing to reduce it's margins so they wait for the tech to get cheap enough so they can make more profits.

And then? The reason why we won't see it the next 5 years still, is because they need to sue someone first. They invented the design and features, so now everyone else who made it first, needs to be sued. That's how fruit does it, and that's how America does it.

Pretty sure they won't release it, or at least not until 2036 or something

I’m sure they have prototypes for many things. But mark my words, the first foldable from Apple will be the iPad or a MacBook. The iPhone contributes about half of Apple’s overall revenue. They would be more conservative in putting what new features on the iPhone.

Besides, all iPhones are IP68. Apple won’t release a new iPhone that have less IP protection. Meanwhile, they don’t have to worry about IP rating on the iPad or Mac, so they will test a foldable product there first.

I don't think Apple engineers are going to be any better than Samsung engineers at making the foldable screen totally flat.

I appreciate that they're still selling a lot of slab phones, but they're very behind in the foldable race.
