Real leather is extremely durable, though obviously there are different grades used in different products and use cases. Just like your hands you can also care for it with a wash and lotion meant for leather from time to time as the natural oils in the leather can become depleted once continuously exposed to water. So if you do take it for a bath in fresh water, which is what IP rated phone are meant for (and not chlorine nor salt water), then and gentle wash and leather lotion will replenish the oils and smoothness after.

As a layer on the back plate of a phone, it isn't even exposed to twists etc. I have a back cover that was hand made in Germany from genuine leather. Quality craftsmanship made to last.

Once the PU leather cracks, there's nothing you can do other than to peel it all off.
I have had all PU leather products, part PU and part genuine leather, and all genuine leather products in a variety of sorts and it is always the PU that cracks and peels. None of the genuine leather ones have yet. Oldest combined product is about 14 years old the the leather is still perfectly fine, despite being on the parts exposed to friction wear, water, oils etc. whilst the PU leather that barely sees any friction, skin contact etc, started cracking long ago.

So for me, I will always avoid fake leather if I have the choice. It does have short life span and is awful to produce (down-cycled plastic) and burns blue as it can't be re-cycled.

The only reason to use it is to save money.

I assumed you meant it was related to the ingress protection based on your sentences. "something you want on an IP68 phone. Try to get real leather wet without ruining it."?

PorkHotdog, 14 Feb 2024Nobody caresAll the third-worlders that need massive storage for their shady whatsapp p*rn and need to flash around their gaudy camera bumps need it.

          Iphone pro frame costs $10.
Xiaomi is asking $70 more if you choose "titanium" over aluminum?

Then of course you had/have the vegan trend, and boom a name change. Leatherette was also used decades ago and left a bad taste in people's mouths over time, for the same reason all plastic leather sucks, namely lack of durability compared to the real deal. Not to mention quite often a very unnatural feel as well. Though this varies with the mixture used.

punmeisterone, 14 Feb 2024Yeah because unlike real leather, it's water resistant... moreNeither has anything to do with the phone being water resistant. The PU leather is just a "cosmetic" layer on the back plate, and the back plate itself has the ingress protection. You could drape it in whatever real or fake leather, and it would not affect the ingress protection, only the heat dissipation.

Which to be fair, was expected. Now let's see what those companion sensors will be alongside the LYT-900 main camera. My hope is 3x LYT-600 imagers which would be a significant upgrade over the IMX858 imagers, especially for the 5x tele that is supposed to do 10x lossless zoom as well.
