Anders, 17 Feb 2024The West includes many of the richest, most valuable econom... moreBeing this clueless... the reason is sinophobia and carrier monopoly, the first is that Chinese product in general is seen with bad light especially Xiaomi is literally called... Xiaomi, that's why back in the day Huawei would use the name HONOR to sell in the west because they avoid Chinese. The other being carrier monopoly, most people in the US got their phone via carrier contract and Samsung and Apple is the biggest cartel there, we can see that although Oneplus got rave reviews everywhere it failed in US, because their carrier contract is not good enough, in the end they even retracted the brand altogether.

dcdev, 18 Feb 2024Wasn't it a reading mode or a safe mode? 😅Nope. Got a hands on on xiaomi 14u, nothing special in it except IR blaster and round edges that feel comfy in hands.

Darth Caesium, 18 Feb 2024That's actually a good reason. I will still prefer 6.3... moreSure. different people have different needs and an ideal market would cater to all of us

(and I'm not part of that consensus)

dcdev, 18 Feb 202424mp is a nice idea, but it means 96-100mp instead of 48-50... moreI meant like 48MP type sensors, that have QuadPixels/ TetraPixel type of layout (CFA), producing 12MP photos, but with sharper detail. That alone should help create a 25-50% improvement in detail, more noticeable in larger sensors.

Anonymous, 18 Feb 2024Intelligence Agencies of many nations consider H a threat. ... moreNo actually the USA threatened tmany countries, including the UK with sanctions like data sharing of intelligence and such if they didn't remove the technology from any services connected to the sharing of data gathering.
Now the USA may have indeed shared proof we will never know, but by all accounts these were deemed as potential threats, not actual spying and data capture by the Chinese, nobody has officially found any backdoors, and nobody has officially said there was sensitive data being transferred back, the word to the public was that nothing has ever been found, merely that they are a 'credible threat'.
They also did the same to ZTE, and I believe Xiaomi are also on the blacklist, much like dozens of oil companies, aircraft manufacturers and a whole host of other large companies.

It is exactly the same for DJI the drone manufacturer, the US has blacklisted and are pushing for a complete USA Ban on sales and imports of their drones.
The first reason was safety concerns, then it was data protection and spying and when both of those didn't stick, they said that the drones were being used against human rights in Myanmar and China, to which DJI said we cant control who buys the drones, we just manufacture them, which is totally fair response.
Talk about hypocrite behaviour from the US government, when they manufacture guns and do their own spying on other nations and even their own citizens, it only works when its in the US favour.

Finally a Xiaomi flagship with non-curved display. It has been a few years since last time. I sure hope this image leak is authentic! :D

Anonymous, 18 Feb 2024Google only sells their phones in a handful of countries. ... more"Google only sells their phones in a handful of countries."

Tell me what I don't know of. I never said that they sell their phone in China; I asked if they can with their services?

"They left the China market a long time ago because they weren't allowed to harvest user data in China."

They left the China market a long time ago, because the Chinese government wasn't open to a WESTERN company having access to user data in China. Just as they did Facebook, Microsoft etc.

Tencent, weibo, baidu, Alibaba etc all harvest user data in China. So, it's not about harvesting user data; it's about who is doing the harvesting.

Nick Tegrataker, 18 Feb 2024Smartphone cameras are so much more computationally advance... moreIt's great, but smartphone cameras and computational photography makes photos look great unless one zooms in too much. It's a 12MP photo so maybe one should compare it with 12MP photos from ILCs. So, more than ever, smartphone lenses should be worthy of 20-24MP photos, especially since they're moving to much larger sensors sizes and more MP. Then zoomed-in pics would appear truly more detailed.

Sony LYT900 sensor has 16 mm diagonal, very far away of 25,4 mm wich is the dimension of 1 inch.
