The amount that's going to change hands hasn't been disclosed.

Reminds me of Red V. Nikon lawsuit thing. where they sue nikon or other camera company for using any lossless or raw codec. except blackmagic uses their own proprietary raw codec. they deserve it for being incompetent at times.

      The specific codec/format/ definitely,
But not the idea of compression
It's too general to be patented
Even Apple has a feud with Red over this

Say you create an invention, patent it because you know it's valuable and keep it to yourself or only share it to a few you trust but then some random stranger comes out of nowhere and sues you because they also want a piece of your cake...

And holding back the entire camera industry..really?

Looks like that whole camera industry was sleeping or having a very good time since they didn't bother investing more into R&D...or they would have probably made that lossless codec before Red did but it looks like only Red activated their brains and chose to think outside of the box so why should they even care about other manufacturers since they're in their own league?

One can own entire company and just let them do their thing, but you pocket the success and profits as well as branding. Given that Nikon is Japanese and hugely successful and recognized worldwide, it's unlikely they'll ruin it. Not impossible, but unlikely.

I would be excited by the idea of a 1"-type sensor Android-Mirrorless point-and-shoot hybrid though. Or even a larger sensor like micro 4/3rds.

First they become the 2nd camera brand to be used on the moon, and now this. Nikon is honestly making a big splash lately. I always haven't thought much about them in the camera world, but they have my attention now. I think they've become more appealing ever since they entered the mirrorless market. I've never paid much attention to their DSLRs.

Expected outcome. Cameras were multiple times as expensive as alternatives. They were mainly oriented on marketing.

AnonD-1147675, 07 Mar 2024How is the Z8 not adequate as a cinema camera already? 8k60... moreThe Z8 is a hybrid mirrorless camera, DSLR-styled. A proper cinema camera is different with plenty of different controls on the outside and many other things, with which I'm not too familiar with. But yes, the Z8 and Z9 are very capable video cameras, just not cinema level, mostly because of their body design and styling, which impends the addition of all the ports and stuff that cinema cameras offer
