Apple patents a foldable display with no creases for iPhone and iPad

Industry insiders claim a 2026 launch is a realistic goal.

I'm with Kuo with this one. The iPhone is Apple's main cash cow that they won't risk the line for some bleeding edge tech. Also, all iPhones are IP68/67 since the iPhone 7. I doubt Apple would release a new iPhone with something less.

Meanwhile, there's no IP rating needed for a Macbook. This will be revenge of the Touch Bar, aka having the whole keyboard side as a touch screen as well.

Can't wait for Tim Cook to go on stage claiming this is a first and that they invented the whole thing.

I bet they won't actually release a foldable anytime soon, or not at all

It's funny how a company that cannot even manufacture its own cardboard boxes can patent a technology like this.

Add to that the fact that other companies have been doing this for several years now.

Anonymous, 08 Mar 2024Hope it folds Flip style since those FOoLD users spend more... moreThat's the point... On a Fold you can still do useful stuff on the outer screen, reserving the fragile inner screen for more serious tasks. With a Flip, hardly anything can be achieved using the outer screen...
And if you just want a smaller phone, a folded Fold or a dedicated small phone (zenfone, Jellystar) is IMO the way to go.

Anonymous, 08 Mar 2024Hope it folds Flip style since those FOoLD users spend more... moreI must be the weird one that uses both. The outer for simple stuff and the inner for bigger stuff.

Read the source article. The patent never claims 'no creases' or 'smooth at all times'. It stipulates that a flexible polymer MAY help create more gradual transition in refractive index. In other words, you will still see creases

Creating a patent is the easiest part before making a foldable phone into reality. Many companies already have patents on foldables. Nothing special.

The hardest way is to make it durable and cost efficient.

Well that will be one more hurdle towards my own adoption of folding tech out of way. Still would have my doubts over durability though, especially at the price Apple will likely be asking……

This is some really cool stuff, honestly.

Hope it folds Flip style since those FOoLD users spend more time on the outer screen than on the inner screen. Amazing mental gymnastics imo. 🙄
