Apple will soon allow developers to distribute their apps on their websites

12 March 2024
No app store needed - but there is a catch. Meanwhile, Apple is changing how alternative app stores and payment methods work.

You don't even understand how market share works. Yes, some people will buy macOS PCs from other manufacturers instead of from Apple. In that case, in the long run, having choices may not affect the market share. Currently, people already have a choice. Most of them choose Windows.

      - 'The market share won't increase just because Apple makes its OS available to all'
Ofc it will, given this fake scenario, Apple would most likely have contracts with OEMs to ship the OS preinstalled, given that, would be up to the user to choose the OS for its machine
      - 'vast majority of people will choose Windows because of much better software support'
Win does have that advantage indeed, but majority of people only use computers for basic needs, which is why we have seen the rise in tablets and Chromebooks,
      - 'Making an OS available to all won't automatically make software support better'
Ofc not, but it would get better over time.
      - 'Do you know Linux?'
Linux is a terrible example, they don't succeed bc of its decentralized and not user centered nature, they need a company/entity behind them, which again it would mot likely fail given its nature (I hope to be wrong here though)
      ---
However, this won't ever happen though, bc of the reasons given in previous comments.

PS. I don't even know what your point is and we're going off topic, so I won't reply further, peace

They just don't do it bc it goes against their walled garden philosophy, it has worked wonders for them (the article its literally about this). Some people gave more reasons below also so I won't repeat em

Bruhh thats not the point, you literally asked why they have low marketshare and I answered

I even fully agree with the rest of your response, idk why you're even arguing that with me, I never said otherwise. I only said MacOS > Win, I despise Apple and its practices as much as the next guy, but that doesn't take away the good job overall they've done on its software

Who is restricting apple doing the same? Did someone told them to isolate mac os from other hardware manufacturers? What apple calls security is actually isolation while isolation =/= security.
Keeping customers tied to specific hardware (not allowing choice) and charging humongous amount just for minimal upgrade is not embarrassing for company like apple, right?

"one million first annual installs ... in the prior calendar year" that sounds like an arbitrarily high barrier but not allowing scam apps to suddenly be deployed is quite good actually.

Stupid Apple making this only for Eu region not worldwide.
If i were EU prime judge i would sent them to a court for this with a fine no less than 20 billion euros.

Apple like to control the user experience. They loose that the moment they offer up MacOS to oems who promptly stuff it into some low end, Celelron powered, sub £200 laptop, and it runs like a pig.
