Flashback: Android Marshmallow is toast

31 March 2024
Android 15 will block apps that target Marshmallow, so let's take this opportunity to say "goodbye" to an OS version that brought us so many cool new features.

There was this old alarm clock app called Morning Routine. It was created around 2014, so it had that "modern" appeal to it. It was my absolutely FAVORITE alarm clock app!

Sadly the developer abandoned it for years and the app finally met its fate in Android 10, stopped working ever since.

I see Android M as the continuation of Android Lollipop. Both of these versions represent the pinnacle of Android imo.

Maybe this is because of my bias towards material design. I still think it's the superior design language over Material Design 2.0 and Material You. Heterogeneity > Similarity.

i miss the time where i can see actual password of already saved wifi network, but oops! scan the goddamn qr code to share!, but hey if anybody having workaroud about this will be appreciated!

also i hate when android lean toward removal of already exist feature on every update, and the worst of it that they can get await with it without slighest retaliation whatsoever merely because of "android is mine and therefore i can screw people up as i see fit".

I still use notin to this day. Even paid for it last year. It's just such a handy tool for a quick reminder - just a single tap, and add what you need to remind yourself, and it's in your notification. Pay one time, and now you can make it persistent. Nothing complicated, just really simple done really well.

Apps just lock up using it unless they're old enough to have normal access.

What's going on with this new system for comments. It's not just mine, I've noticed other people's comments randomly popping in again. Server issues?

                      This makes me sad.

Back in the days of Marshmallow, there were several groundbreaking and innovative things being introduced to Android to make it better.

These days, it's a bunch of gimmicks plus a removal of some useful feature, to the point where the majority of the last 5 updates actually make Android worse than the previous version!

Android 6.0 Marshmallow was the best version of Android.

Wow it's almost decade. Android 6 still feels modern to me, i mean it already had granular security settings, native fingerprint support, doze, and if i'm not mistaken we can already reply chat through notification since Android 6.

And the 32-bit thing is related - people care that they can't run old software, not so much for the technical details of 'why'. But again, this is a look back at an interesting point in mobile history, not a report on why makers moved on to 64-bit only and why Google doesn't care about backwards compatibility as much as Microsoft does.

Or are you referring to the Pocket edition, which seems to work fine on my Android 14 Pixel 7a?
Regardless yes I agree Google would rather push gacha garbage than premium games. Meanwhile iOS gets proper console games like Death Stranding.

Android 10 (API 29): Quince Tart
Android 11 (API 30): Red Velvet Cake
Android 12 (API 31): Snow Cone
                                      Android 13 (API 33): Tiramisu
Android 14 (API 34): Upside Down Cake

I have to say Material UI (which came with Lollipop) was the biggest and best redesign Android ever had. The new Material You (which came with Android 12) is also good, but feels much more childish and less sophisticated.
