Flashback: Android Marshmallow is toast

31 March 2024
Android 15 will block apps that target Marshmallow, so let's take this opportunity to say "goodbye" to an OS version that brought us so many cool new features.

Some of the Best Custom ROMs throughout the ages:

Original CyanogenMod (2008/2.0 - 2.4/2010), then AOKP (2011/4.0 - 4.2/2013), then PAC-ROM (2013/4.3 - 4.4/2014), then ResurrectionRemix (2015/5.0 - 8.0/2018), then Evolution X (2019/8.0 - 12/2023).

...felt it was appropriate here : )

Android 6.0 apps as a target requirement is much secure than Android 5.1 that prompts to allow/block permission that I need to their device within Android 6.0 and above. It gets even quite more secure to put Android 8.0 apps as a target with almost complete solution of blocking some permission.

Now I think my Android 9 phone still usable in the case. Still no restrictions in storage access (Android/data) without setting up SAF. Almost complete to control permission, less hassle.

Migrating to Android 14 or above is hard change, that I know its complicated to manage storage restrictions to Android/data in exchange of more features and security. That's for the reason if I bought a new phone as I need

I don't think Flex Storage (aka Adoptable Storage) was removed.

      https://source.android.com/docs/core/storage/adoptable
"Devices running Android 9 and higher can use adoptable storage and FBE."

oem's killed the fun some time ago with their locked bootloaders an make it hard for some folks to put a rom with newer version of android and bypassing their pathetic 1 or 2 upgrades at that time🙄,but that is how smartphone business function now-each year is a new haleluia

Peter-B, 31 Mar 2024How many people do you think know what ADB is? Also, some ... moreVery little and that's the problem with this article. Instead of showing how to use ADB, they just state that you "can no longer install old apps" and that's all.
32-bit apps are a different problem because they aren't related to the system.

Anton .el PAPI., 31 Mar 2024From when things were still a little fun!Ikr?! Every new android release with its dessert name and everything was so much fun to read about!
              :D

Czuba, 31 Mar 2024That's not a problem at all. If you have the .apk file... moreHow many people do you think know what ADB is?
Also, some apps that old are probably 32-bit only and that won't run on new chipsets (well, Xiaomi had an emulation of some sort, but most makers don't).

Anonymous, 31 Mar 2024Serious and mature? Material you is so infantile. The customisable contrast is an excellent thing about Material Design, even if it has flaws in the way it's currently implemented, but the flat design that it uses is annoying. I do still like Pixel UI, but more so because of its snappiness and out of a hatred for OneUI, MIUI/HyperOS, OriginOS and iOS.

My only experience with Marshmallow was with Samsung & a Sony device.

                    It was terrible.

In terms of custom roms, I think Kitkat and Nougat were the best versions in those years. Lollipop ate battery like crazy and Marshmallow felt unfinished

Not only are those color ugly and don't match many wallpapers. You can't even change it to a more vibrant color. Even iOS has more customization options then stock Android.

That's not a problem at all. If you have the .apk file then download platform-tools and use this command:
                                  adb install --bypass-low-target-sdk-block AppName.apk
Also you have to enable debugging.
Why have you mention it only in the last paragraph? This should be at the beginning with a complete instruction.
Oh wait. But then your article wouldn't have any sense.

For me the worst thing that Google did is permanently removing icon packs. Recently my MIUI started to work like crap so I made a Hard Reset. After that I realized that Google removed many Icon Packs that I bought!!! They basically stole my cash.

it's too soon to leave them behind. There are many good kept phones which run Android 5.6.7... they do well their job. It's a sin to throw in the trhrashcan good and working hardware just because some silly programmer decided to noto support them anymore. They're perfect for basic usage like instant messaging, web browsing, email, calendar managing and such. Not everyone is interested in gaming nor in root pastiches
