Apple might have to let iPhone users uninstall the Photos app because of EU rules

02 April 2024
The DMA demands that users are able to install alternative apps - but also that they can remove pre-installed Apple apps.

As a consumer, don't you want the ability to uninstall apps you don't want to use? If you can do that, how is it not good for you? Your comment is very weird.

Apple's nightmare, not iPhone users in the EU.

Azu10157, 02 Apr 2024No. Let the EU continue its work.No when they are starting to ask for nonsense like this.

Next they will complain the "phone dialer" cant be uninstalled.

Also, how fun it took them like a decade later to realize all these issues. Perhaps they are trying to cover something else....

I get the browser, but this is becoming retarded.

If there's something I can say for Apple, is that most of their first party apps are fine the way they are.

Why would someone uninstall the camera app for example? Or the photo gallery? You cant do that on a Samsung for example

Well, it seems like EU regulations step into very sensitive matter: as far as i know, it is not only Photos app, or any other app that shall seem restricted and proprietary in iOS, it is their approach to handle data overall. They are still known for not giving the user access to the phone file system, not having an file manager as such. Which could be made for security reasons, or whatever else.

In android, for example, it is just android system that makes all of that operations, including managing files, sharing them, etc. See, even not having an photo app, you still will be capable send photo or share it, with help of your messenger or mail, or file manager. The same goes for any file or data, basically.

But the question is, if that particular apple's approach needs to be legally regulated? It is probably their particular business affair, or engeneering approach, or whatever, but it's still not an violation of any kind, i guess.

Regulation like this isn't good for competition or the consumer. This is why I am hoping American companies can force European unions to back down, like Elon is with Scandinavian Tesla workers.

34 million iPhones sold in Europe in 2023.

They might not like it but Apple will bend the knee.

Sorry but this is just getting out of hand, Apple's photos app is the place where you add everything Apple invented for their photos, from depth effects, adding portrait effects, changing focus points, to editing moving photos, etc. It's their version of a gallery app with tons of functionality that is theirs. No one is forcing you to use it either, they allow other gallery apps to be installed. This for me is just plain stupid and I'm not even an Apple user, my wife has an iPhone and I know how it operates. At this rate the EU wants to make iOS work just like Android, the only difference being how it looks. I don't like Apple but even I can understand building something and making it uniquely yours

Jon Prossers ‘Give a mouse a cookie’ analogy seems quite prophetic.

At this rate, Apple probably should start calculating whether the cost to deal with all these is worth it. Maybe just pull out the iPhone from the EU.

No it's not??? You can just uninstall Google Photos on your Android phone and you won't get any problems with it. Similar to most vendor's own gallery, but for this one you might need adb.

Also, in Android, Gallery isn't the one that handles photo/video picking when you want to share it. The "Android System" app does that for you.

Is not like Apple force you to use it own photo gallery 🤦🏻‍♂️ Google too put too much integration to it own photo gallery into Android system 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ WTF wrong with EU. Might as well ban iOS entirely 🙄🤦🏻‍♂️

even if they let me have a iPhone with android i will still not use itv.
