And if m1 is so good why can't one play AAA games on it?

Premium laptop means premium materials and actually SOC price doesn't affect final price much. Premium Intel/AMD laptops can be priced more than MacBook Pro (excluding ridiculous RAM/SSD options ;) )...

Kangal, 06 Apr 2024I've heard this rumour back in the Zen3+ days. It did... moreYes and during that time Intel is sleeping.

They said they have bought the lastests ultra powerful EUV machine

It seems they haven't unboxed it yet.

It's like they more or less organize their market share behind the scene between qc arm Intel and vidia. Detrimental for consumers but good for their $$$.

Me I won't buy anything for now, I prefer to wait, and see. Too much fak'e is just too much.

Apple try to push competition but I don't buy them either. I'm a dev, all dev ( except the python 'AI' guys but are they coders ? Hihi) I see are bragging their fancy m3 pro, but are still using PC for their real coding stuff in fact....

It didn't pan out with Zen4, which was mostly a light upgrade and porting of that Zen3+ into the new node and architecture. Have heard they've been holding onto the big architectural improvements for beyond Zen4 when they've matured the AM5 platform a bit.

                    Still I don't buy it.
Right now AMD is on top, by a long shot. And they're pulling their punches. It's likely they will drop feed these performance increases and efficiency increases to stay ahead of Intel, but not to totally decimate them. It's more profitable that way.

Nvidia does the same thing with their GeForce cards against Radeon. Whenever they have a big lead, they pump up the prices and pull the brakes. It's why they were confident in pulling that shullbit with the RTX-2 and RTX-4 lineup. They're just milking the consumers.

Problem is, AMD doesn't care much of 'consummer' cpu and they are a bit hard to get. They make most their money selling gpu and ultra raw power cpu for datacenters.

Another problem, most 4nl and now 3nm tsmc production is swallowed by Apple. And Samsung despite their strice is still 18 months behind.

Under the hood, I won't be surprised it's a non disclosed agreement with Intel because of their x86 licence.... Not very fair for consumers in the end, but business is never really fair.

In the end, consumer has either to buy a crazy price for 32gb mac with mac os Wallen annoying garden, or pay a less crazy price and open machine but with noisy fans and low battery PC. Choose your pill, big brother is watching you anywhere you go.

Arm is not really RISC anymore and AMD/Intel has some great architecture.

Arm with x86 makes no sense. Only max users are able to support that kind of awful situation of migration buying new licence and emulation.

Kangal, 06 Apr 2024Based on my estimations, emulation definitely takes a hit. ... morePromising arm xpus for Intel for 15+ years. It's just advertising, vaporware.

Some nice proc on pc. It's trendy to bash PC's, especially for Mac users after paying $1000 option for just 16 GB . A pill Hard to swallow, as it is both a marketing trap from Apple and tech limitation of their onchip memory limiter architecture...

The fact is, Intel and AMD are far more powerful at raw performance, apple using what what its Cloud, certainly not their own siliconshit.

Also amd last zen are very very good and catch up and a very lower price. Just not easy to find, AMD not very interested in consumer cpu, and also limiter tsmc 4nm taken over by Apple.
It's a fact easy to check.

Intel should just improve their fav making it real 4nm and even 3nm and good bye apple. Seem they struggle anyway but well.

Apple is crazy good optimising for sure, that's how they had to survive after switching many times their architecture (68l, mips, Intel, then arm) and apple users always accept those awful and costly migration because they are fanboys

Same for Samsung, they can't catch up their fav with tsmc.

Some mysteries there to me, as they all use the same euv machines...

But I agree, the famous 7840u is awesome already

I don't believe those arm thing arm is old tech, and is not risc anymore. and Intel and AMD has catched up and have very nice architecture. Still some legacy stuff slowing things down for sure but it is some price to pay to not get all those problems emulation / compatibility issues Mac user have ( they say it's cool but it's not, buying new licence running emulators seriously.... Also therre will be forever x86 binaries given problems. But we'll Mac users are max users, after paying that much and get addicted to aple you won't say it's bad)

Kangal, 06 Apr 2024Based on my estimations, emulation definitely takes a hit. ... moreZen 5 is rumored to be a big jump in efficiency and performance.
A guy in anandtech's forums says 40% core per core improvement against zen 4. Probably best case scenario but still.

Based on my estimations, emulation definitely takes a hit.
Last calculation it was about x2.3 times slower, it's probably closer to x1.9 now/upon release. Which is a marked improvement over the x4-x7 slower we saw it evolve from the QSD 835 days (competing against Intel Atom x7-7850, despite native performance closer to Intel Core-M i7-675Y).

So where does that leave us?
Basically, Windows Laptops with ARM in 2025 is around the level of 2021 MacBooks. Despite the newer lithography and technology, all that efficiency and battery life is wasted, because Microsoft has "good emulation" versus Apple which had an even better "hybrid acceleration" with their M1 Debut. Slower, less efficient, and older technology BUT the software was cohesive and developers were on board.... and for the meantime they had special dedicated hardware to accelerate certain x86 threads on their ARM chipset.

                                  Am I optimistic ?
No, but Yes. No I don't think this will be as painless as imagined and won't move the needle forward as much as the hype machine suggests. But Yes I do think this will put pressure on AMD to innovate harder, and especially Intel which is FAR behind at this point. Still I think the resident x86 manufacturers are safe now and in the near future, but this should put some needed pressure on their behind.
