Google's new JPEG image encoder offers higher quality and saves on size and bandwidth

07 April 2024
The new jpegli coding library could be the next step in evolving the ubiquitous image format.

So this implementation is based on a part of JPEG XL without supporting the whole JPEG XL standard, which is royalty free? Why Google, Why?

SShock, 07 Apr 2024That's because Apple uses HEIC encoding by default. No... moreNo one enables HEIC as the format is buggy and terrible. Causes lag on computers you store them on and they often don't work in third party apps or services.

I rarely agree with Google, but fixing Jpeg is definitely a better option than using a half thought through incompatible format.

Aan2007, 07 Apr 2024what? literally nobody besides few americans use HEIF, ever... moreThat's because Apple uses HEIC encoding by default. No one else does that even if they support it. My S23 Ultra supports HEIC, but is disabled by default and unless you enable it yourself, it's unlikely it'll ever be used by anyone. Which for majority of casual users even who want high end phone means it'll be using JPG by default.

Big idea hope for big success.

you should sometimes travel outside US to realize how miniscule is apple global market share

jpegli is actually developed by JXL devs

potato4k, 07 Apr 2024So this is basically the RCS of image compression format. W... moreIssue with HEIF is that it's not free and has equally bad reception as a result. Google could easily push WebP more aggressively by providing SDK's for its implementation.

Free is better, but just because it's free, that doesn't mean in wide adoption. Sometimes that is the case (like with MP3), but often it's not (Vorbis, WebP and a lot of other formats).

So this is basically the RCS of image compression format. Where everyone has moved on to HEIF, Google with its failed webP decided to just frankenstein the old JPEG.

If you are using software that doesn't support WebP or some other new format, the right thing to do is to COMPLAIN about it to the author of that software.

Software developers are lazy, they won't fix anything unless someone complains about it.
I know because I'm software developer :) and the lack of feedback is source of many usability issues.

Second is even worse. More pixelated, more contrast, different colour .
Basically tricks done by pixel to fool people to believe that is actually better.

why not to use avif, heic or maybe jpeg2000 for lossless quality instead of tweaking the JPEG standard
jpeg is still jpeg. any size reduction would look crusty. just as mp3 of image format.

Higher quality but still lower size? Hmm. Nah.

So many apps don't know what to do with it and in the end you are double compressing same file just because you have to turn it from WebP to JPG and both are lossy so you're degrading quality literally for no reason if the thing was in JPEG from get go.
