The new jpegli coding library could be the next step in evolving the ubiquitous image format.

And sorry, there are still many android OEMs outside those three.

Google is not making a new format here, it is making a better encoder for it. I'm currently using MozJPEG, but I might switch to Jpegli if the claims pan out.

Webp is not a failure given how nearly everyone has support for it. Unlike heic, which will never replace jpeg as long as Apple does Apple things. Webp or avif is the future, again a struggle between existing adoption (webp) vs better new format (avif). I think jpegxl is dead at this point.

You know, you can just simply put a microSD card slot in the smartphone. This kind of advancement happens because pretty much nobody except Sony don't put microSD card slot on phones, at least in the flagship segment. You can miss me with all the "sD cArD is sLoW" and "iT cORruPts dAtA" since you buy cheap China clones anyway.

Anonymous, 08 Apr 2024Read the article.I already did, very carefully. There was no hint of privacy invasion by Google (I wouldn't say the mention of black magic qualifies as one).

The reasoning given, saving money on storage, is an acceptable one, if a huge share of entire Google drive is just photos.
And yet, it troubles me: if there is a hidden privacy invasion? Because its Google.

BTW the HEIC still coming from S23ultra are just 8bit/channel so it gives smaller files but no HDR.
I've started to use AGC 9.2 GCam mod that captures Ultra HDR images in S23ultra but it's still limited to 12MP but it gives better colours and realism to image.

HEIF works fine on iOS, android and MacOS, while windows decoding is hit and miss as sometimes it decodes it as fast as it should, other times you'll be waiting for the macroblocks to go away...

And using your example, casual users should be using HEIC then. Casuals aren't doing much with their pictures, they aren't content creators. No support? Drop it in Simple Gallery and generate a JPEG in no time.
