China wanted to gain control of that Island way before TSMC even existed let alone become dominant semiconductor Manufacturer.

TSMC was meant to start making 5nm chips in Arizona at the start of this year. Nothing has materialised from that. 3nm and 2nm production sounds like a pipe dream. Anyway, TSMC is flush with cash and $6.6 bil should not be enough incentive to set up a plant in the US rust belt with no adequate infrastructure, skilled workers or water. Apparently, chip production requires a lot of water and Arizona is mainly desert.

Good. It’s about time the US did more of this for critical industries. China already does it and has no plans to change that.

TSMC's problem in the US is not the money, it's the lack of skilled labor. They have said so themselves.

Flash memory is at sky high prices at the moment due to not enough supply. The more facilities manufacturing to bring prices down the better. The world is only going to need more and more!

why tho? aren't they making tens of billions each year in profit? so this means that they can afford to build in multiple countries and make back all that money in less than a decade.

Darth Caesium, 08 Apr 2024The US government is doing all this while they have a natio... moreThey can spend as much as they want as long as the rest of the world believes in petro-dollar and the associated "American Dream".
If other countries stop using us dollar in their economies the us dollar will its value and the us will go bankrupt. but as long as they can brainwash the world the green banknotes will remain in their position.

Fighter Fish, 08 Apr 2024So this is not government subsidising an industry?
USA = h... moreIf I had the idea to build a huge factory producing something important and would come up with a good and promising plan, the US govt would reject it.
If a company like TSMC with good ties to high-ranked people in US says it needs a new factory for free, the govt is there to help.
Democracy at its best.
And then Chinese companies are portraied as a threat to democracy and values because they have ties to their govt. 🤷♂️
