Manchito, 12 Apr 2024All that power to browse the web and see your pics from you... moreNot gonna call out anyone explicitly but most Mac Users who are casual only need M1 power lol. I play games with a Intel Mac and it's pretty shite. I'm switching back to Windows anyway. Found a good ASUS Vivobook (LCD) for about 270 bucks with trade in!

The slowest MacOS Device was the one given to developers at the start of 2020. It's a Mac Mini that uses the Apple A12Z chipset. This was basically a higher binned A12X chipset that launched 2 years prior.

The next step above is the M1, and it's a significant upgrade; in efficiency, performance, graphics, and support for x86 threads. The M1 was designed concurrently with the A13, which was a significant upgrade over the A12 chipset. With the final draft of the M1 taking upgrades from the A14 architecture too. The M2 lineup was a refresh in many ways, and just took the efficiency upgrades from the A15, and turned them into pure performance gains. It would've been worth it, had the prices stayed same or gotten cheaper. But most of the M2 lineup actually had price hikes. And even that would have been worth it, if Apple would have included a new feature; like FaceID. They have the cutout and notch, so it's there. But their backwards decision led to a lukewarm successor.

So after a decent hiatus, everyone was excited about the M3 lineup of Mac's. And not only did they not deliver any new features (eg FaceID), but it seems the wait was for nought. It wasn't really a better chipset, it offered fairly similar efficiency just at a higher performance. And it did this using a new silicon standard / lithography. One that's been highly awaited for a while now. Price wise they did seem to go up a bit, perhaps to match inflation. Overall, this was an even more disappointing launch.

So am I excited for the M4 lineup?
No. I don't know, and highly doubt, that they'll finally bring FaceID. Or Apple Pen 3 support. Or using finger/touch support on the screen. Will the prices go down, highly doubt it. It will likely go up a bit. What about the chipset, would that offer higher efficiency, higher performance, or both ? Really doubting everything lately. And now them mentioning and focusing on buzzwords/marketing such as "AI" means it's likely to be a worse chipset than imagined.

So yah, even Apple loyalist will be disappointed by next years Mac. That's my prediction, what is yours?

HyperionBurn, 12 Apr 2024didnt we just get the m3 macbooks? or is it just meWe did get M3 Airs like a couple of weeks ago if I'm not mistaken. Making the already powerful M2 Airs start at 999 USD and making the M1 Air discontinued from Apple's website. They're going for 650-750 on Walmart or BestBuy

If you are a student, I would still go with Windows because it has more RAM than Apple give. OEMS also don't try to upsell you on RAM nor storage either. You can find a 600 dollar Windows Laptop with around 12-16GB of RAM (probably LPDDR4) and at least 256GB of space, normally 512.

                            Planned Obsolescence is Priority One.
                            All other priorities are rescinded.

This is pure software. Apple _will_ sell this as an iPhone 16 exclusive feature, just like Google planned to try with the Pixel 9.

And here I was thinking Apple was above the whole "AI" marketing nonsense.

Eh. Unless they bring the base price down/ reduce upgrade cost, this is still not it. M1 Macbooks are still the thing to buy for value, perfectly fine for office work, without the insane and generstionally increasing temps of the newer M-Chipsn nor their throttling.

Yeah but RAM and SSD will still be soldered to the logic board, and the battery will be glued into place. So they won’t be an option for people who don’t have money to burn by buying a new one every 5 years at their RAM/SSD prices when the battery is degraded.
