The company tried to dismiss it, but didn't succeed.

DVSeal, 13 Apr 2024Exactly. We can trace modern walth inequality and power sh... moreI have a better reason why capitalism is failing: weak antitrust laws. And this happened in the 80s due to Reagan's appointed watchdog authority reinterpreting the Sherman Laws (first antitrust laws), who just so happened to be a former executive at Microsoft. Yet, they were already weakening when AT&T was not split up in the 1950s because the CIA prevented them from doing so, saying that they'd lose the Korean War if it was split up. This is the problem. Antitrust law is weak, and many monopolies have formed that would've been split up early on if the people in charge cared, and worse, weren't connected to these companies themselves.

what's the point of leeching so much money off of people if you're gonna lose like at least 10% of it just doing random ahh legal stuff, ik ik the other 80-90% is important but idk man 10% sounds like a small amount till you hear 10 or so billion dollars or something.

At the speed UK / EU are doing this again and again, it seems like they need huge money to do something bad. There is always a bigger Bully.

Apple just love Law suits 😱

Get out of UK, Apple. I bet they can live without using your techs anyway. LOL

Hope this situation, and many more to come, wipes that smug grin off of Tim Cooks face. Also bet he jumps ship before Apple really starts to loose money.

Why you expelled this glorious country that started numerous trade wars against Asian countries automatically? Kinda interesting that my comment got downvoted...

We can trace modern walth inequality and power shift decades back. I'd go as far as to suggest the roots of today's economic and political injustice can be traced back to the pre Industrial revolution times.

That said, indeed around the early to mid 20th century workers had, in general, more ownership over their labor and had more social security, but without going into details here, by the 80s most of it was taken away.

As for how corporations are shifting power further into their favor in our time now - I'd recommend checking out Yanis Varoufakis' book Technofeudalism: What killed capitalism. It's a fascinating read.

If you are a history buff, you can study into the evolution and history of taxation. What it is today, is VERY different to what it is, and what it stood for. So in even more ways, Apple's commision is even worse in that context.

To be honest, in a more truthful and sensible society, Apple would not be able to implement or get away with what it does today. Think like 1910s-1970s. Things took a nosedive in the 1970s in terms of power held, systemic structure, and societal decay. It started at the heart of the economical world: USA, and this permeated into many others nations.

A billion dollar law suite, if successful, will first - get the developers properly compensated for their work, second - will hurt Apple's bottom line because by creating this precedent it will establish the grounds for countries to push for further regulations on how Apple and other corporations operate.
Don't look at it only in isolation as apple simply paying 1b once and forgetting about it. Obviously it takes time and doesn't initially look like something major, but things like that add up and eventually have some positive effect
Take the EU pushing apple to switch to USB C for example.
If people make enough noise, governments will eventually need to do at least the bare minimum, despite lobbyists constant efforts to bribe themselves out of any responsibility.

What the hell is one billion dollar for a company sitting on trillions of dollars? Such lawsuits are ridiculous and don't damage Apple at all. It's only if you are going to oblige Apple to comply to any rule that it will hurt them or just threaten them to be banned from sales all together for any Apple product if they don't. That would hurt them. There is a reason why they became a trillion dollar company...by stealing money for products and services that are far less worth that the demanded prices. A true monopoly directed by a bunch of megalomaniac board of managers and shareholders who just don't know when enough is enough or just think they can get away with everything because of the size of their bank account. Apple hasn't released any product or service that is truly groundbreaking or adding value. It's just selling a brand and a reputation at a ridiculous price and through masterminded marketing finds a huge audience that is blindly willing to buy their stuff, just for the sake of being part of the huge fandom family of followers. Their products aren't bad, far from it, they're just not worth the money they ask for.

Well i would say to them that without the apps there would be no market from Apple. YT viewers pay Google, appstore/Google play users pay for the apps and developers. Google and apple charge the 30% of the money we were intending to pay developers.
*And there is also ads on appstore and Google play, and how much do they give developers for that?

Kangal, 13 Apr 2024A better analogy would be like going to a Flea Market. And ... moreI'd argue apple's commission is worse than govt. taxes because taxes are supposed to be then implemented in social services and benefits like healthcare, education, infrastructure, housing etc.(as a general concept, I'm not getting into how it is being executed in practice because that's a whole different can of worms).
Whereas the commission that a corporation collects has never been conceived as something that would benefit the ones who generate that profit in the first place.
I worked for a corporation where I observed profits being generated from literally thin air on the back of customers, often times without their knowledge or consent. So they get scammed out of their money and then the workers who are doing the job which generates said profit also do not benefit from it, because there is no reward system based on percentage of the profit you generate for that corporation with your labor. You also don't get a word in whether this should or shouldn't be done, because another way that corporations differ from a government is that they are not democratic. Rather a corporation is authoritarian, because, employees cannot vote on who to lead and manage the corporation and are not part of the decision making.(Again, I am generalizing here for the sake of the analogy)

DVSeal, 13 Apr 2024It's not a question of competition in this case though... moreA better analogy would be like going to a Flea Market. And there are a hundred stalls. Merchants come and setup their stall, and sell their goods. So in a way, all the merchants are competing against each other, like Apps competing for users. And just like how the Developers pay to be hosted within Apple's Market.... well, the merchants need to pay the Flea Market.

The big difference is that Merchants pay a REALLY high fee to the managers of the Flea Market. But I guess they break even, or make a profit, at the end of the day. They absolutely don't pay a "commision" on every sale to management. In fact, the only ones that do collect such a commision on EVERY sale is the government through a Goods and Services Tax, and this changes from State to State and Nation to Nation.

So maybe Apple wants to convey the message that they are NOT some managers of a Flea Market, rather that, they are the government itself. In a digital sense. So that against actual governments that have real military... yeah, good luck with that spin Apple 🤷
