Sony confirms the Xperia event on May 17

18 April 2024
The even should introduce the new Sony Xperia VI. Whether the Xperia 5 VI is also in attendance remains to be seen.

Anonymous, 19 Apr 2024In your dreams. Because no one else on Earth thinks so. ... moreI'm tired of your blatant lies, kiddo.. Sony's JPEG is noticeably sharpened up, if not extremely heavily oversharpened like some others. Import the DNG files onto a photo editor of your choice, increase the sharpness slider and you will see that you have to apply a hefty amount of sharpening to make them look similar to the JPEGs. It's not my problem that you've never tried this out just because doing so would be against your narrative that "Xperia doesn't overprocess photos".

If you use Lightroom, I have bad news for you - By default, Lightroom applies sharpening to the imported RAW files, so if they look comparable to JPEGs at the time of import then that means JPEGs already have plenty of sharpening baked in.

"X100P is far below what imx989 can do"
Among all the flagships out there, X100 Pro is literally the best phone camera to capture details during the day, resolving the balcony pattern commendably at 1x and producing incredibly detailed 2x crop zoom shots. Xperia 5 V had very noticeable Quad Bayer "worms" in its photos taken in the same set of scenes. In fact Sony's poor implementation of Quad Bayer on Xperia makes me far less hopeful for a potential adaptation of a QB sensor on their upcoming a7S IV.

Anonymous, 19 Apr 2024Little gift to you ... Surely it is of your interest , P7... moreHuawei's camera software allows you to disable the crop - For instance, shooting at 0.8x on P40 Pro effectively undid the crop and allowed you to shoot in a full 23mm field of view. Telephoto cameras also crop in a bit by default, but again the full sensor area can be utilised by either tapping the telephoto zoom button then slightly zooming out, or simply shooting in raw.

Given that you thoroughly ignored what I said regarding Xperia's image processing, I'm inclined to believe that you're agreeing with me and have no comeback.

The battery life is industry leading and I don't even care about the performance. I guess when it comes to light and compact devices there are only Apple and Sony. Google used to make lightweight and compact devices, but starting with the Pixel 6 series released in 2021, they moved away from that path a bit. Meanwhile, the rest of the OEMs continue to manufacture increasingly larger and heavier bricks. Eventually, in the not-too-distant future, all mobile devices from all OEMs will literally be bricks like the vivo X Note, which measures 7.0" and weighs 250 grams.

Anonymous, 18 Apr 2024Dear, that is a company that make photo and video cameras.... moreAnyone who extensively uses an Alpha camera should complain about Xperia.

There is often a long delay (more than half a second) if you don't prefocus your shots. Color is not consistent between lenses. Always-on pixel binning means photos from the main lens are better colored but less sharp. (The choice to pixel bin should be the user's.) A focal length between 28 and 35 would be ideal for the main lens, and Nubia understands this. (Honestly, I'd pack 50 as a main lens, 135 for telephoto, and 24 for wide... as that's what I usually put on an Alpha.) Dark photos are underexposed nearly always. The minimal focus distance on every lens makes "macro" photography easiest with the telephoto lens. (Being able to step back the sensor from the lens element would make this effective e.g. a built-in extension tube, but that is not a thing in cellphone photography. Most other manufacturers find a way to get the UW to work in macro mode.) You can still get artifacts from specific scenes/backgrounds. On an Alpha, the refresh rate and color of the preview display step up while the shutter release is half-pressed. This isn't the case with Xperia.

Wind rejection is not very good in video. Super slow-mo is gone. Echo rejection only works in some apps: in WhatsApp but not Signal.

And then there's auto mode. It needs no introduction. Yuck. None of the multiple auto modes on an Alpha are as terrible as either auto or basic on Xperia.

It's crazy that you imagine everyone who enjoys photography automatically loves every flaw of the Xperia.

Is Sony still making phones? Where are they marketed? coz it sure is not my country

Sony sure takes its sweet time releasing phones. It's almost as if the people at the top there live in their own reality separate from the consumers perception of them. That top-down approach again and overly conservative Japanese thinking. If they keep this up, they'll fade into cell phone history.

The problem is it isn't unique anymore and cost a fortune....

I hope the new phone has VOLTE on it as my 5 month old cperia1V will cease to work when 3g goes off in June. Can get no help to fix the problem.

If most people want something, and you want them to buy your phone, you'll give them what they want. Sony phones are decent but you have a LOT of things you have to put up with.

" wide-angle main camera is 8.5mm, which is the shortest among modules that use full 1.02-type sensors. The mov is basically 8.67/8.7, so it is equivalent to others. 23mm, h is equivalent to 22.5mm.
The periscope telephoto lens is 15mm, which is slightly longer than the 14.552mm of the previous P60 Pro, so the effective sensor size has also been increased from about 7mm to about 7.2mm.
The main camera is still cropped to 27mm by default, which is about 0.8x to fully use (even high-pixel mode also has viewing angle cropping). Even the telephoto lens is cropped to 95mm by default. The ultra-wide angle is 1.95mm, which may be the lens module of Mate60 Pro."

Digital crop of 3rd camera is getting more and more common.

Jpeg and Dng are almost 100% similar. Their Dng are not any processed.
I have seen dngs from mark 2 to 5.
Far more editing flexibility than crap isocell hp2 and gn1.

Anonymous, 18 Apr 2024Dear, that is a company that make photo and video cameras.... moreXperia does apply sharpening to photos quite a bit more compared to other companies (Vivo, Xiaomi, Oppo). The amount is also clearly higher than how much they apply it on their dedicated cameras, presumably to mask its significant sensor size disadvantage over APS-C/FF.

Personally, Xperia's default colour rendering is pretty all right - I like it better than Apple's or Samsung's, it's fairly neutral (if a bit too inconsistent with white balance and dynamic range adjustment) although it seems to struggle with skin tones in certain situations. With that said, the other aspects of the processing leave a lot to be desired, including 2x crop digital zoom quality and its primitive JPEG noise reduction compared to its peers.

My favourite colour profile on my a7IV is S-Cinetone, which looks surprisingly great not only for a video but for a photo too, but unfortunately Xperia only seems to have it available for video recording.

I would love if Sony would come to its senses and make the 5 a REAL Compact by bringing the screen down to 5.5" tops to at least make up for the horrible software experience with no long term support.
But if there's something I've learned by now as an ex-Xperia user, it's that Sony simply refuses to listen or learn. They'll do whatever they want to and not care what their ever smaller consumer base thinks.
It's a shame but they're not alone. Most OEMs stopped listening to consumer feedback years ago.
