The specs are pretty insane for the price - or rather, the price is pretty insane for the specs.

Anonymous, 20 Apr 2024Because they want to stay up to date. Then maybe increase their budget? You can get both great software and hardware with that price. (Even Samsung at that pricing only gives you 2 OS updates, technically 1 since A0x series always starts with 1 OS older than the rest lineup).

Anonymous, 20 Apr 2024I thought it used the T820. Maybe I'm wrong.Yep it is. Both are 5G, though.

disgusting specs for the price tbh. helio g36 is basically p35 which is a 6 year old low midrange chipset !! that phone is already chugging out of the box 😂😂😂 the A05 is quite acceptable, good for casual use. but if i focus more on better specs like faster chipset and storage type i'd give it a pass.

finding proper parts for certain phone models is quite challenging when it comes to umidigi, doogee, and cubot. (cmiiw) but yeah, if xiaomi, vivo and oppo had their interest on using unisoc chips then they would sell it fairly cheap.

Coming out on about....half a year probably

From Umidigi's Chinese website it seems like G6x, G6 5G and A16 series are also coming. Who knows if they actually reach normal sales channels or if they just get dumped to Global Sources like their A15 Ultra

These are good for back up phone. But unisoc chips are vulnerable regrading data and remote crash at least till early 2023. Don't know the status now.

Entry level phones these days are pretty good (for that price point of course). I got a new phone for only ~$100 and it uses unisoc T606 (one step down from this umidigi phone, no 5G, but still decently fast), 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and 5000mAh battery. Just imagine, only a few years ago, I bought a phone for slightly more than $100 with only 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. Sure, the build quality might be questionable, but at least to me, my cheap phones lasted for more than 2 years (even I'm still using that old 3GB RAM phone as my secondary device). The performance has been good enough for most basic tasks, hiccups and slow downs are certainly present, but the work is still done in the end and that's what matters to me. What a time to be alive, I'm really grateful for that.

Edit: oh and I never really bothered with software updates. Updates often broke features for the phones in that price segment. Security patches may still be behind, but so far it has been still okay.
