If that's the case, then Sony wouldn't bother to put it back on the 2020 Xperia 1 Mk2 after two years of removing it. Even ASUS did the same with ROG Phone 3, but only to see it back on the ROG Phone 5 with additional ESS Sabre DAC.

This is the last opportunity to put the audio jack on a top level phone. Cannot see connecting an external mike via non-rugged USB-C connector. When using built-in mike(s) you get 2nd class audio with top class video -- duh.

No other smartphone camera (including main camera) would be able to make background objects look that blurry (when used at the same focus distance).

But even the 200 megapixel output would be still much worse than what you get with a 200 megapixel Bayer sensor and probably also worse than a 200 megapixel Quad Bayer sensor.
An example: The Honor Magic6 Pro uses a 180 megapixel tele camera that likely has a Tetra²pixel array. The tele camera delivers slightly more pixels per object than an S24 Ultra or Pixel 8 Pro, but the results look much worse and even much more pixelated. Either they only use the 45 megapixel mode or the demosaicing doesn't work well due to the different color filter array.

I guess I'm assuming the pixels are remapped depending on the lighting conditions, maximizing resolution when the lighting is adequate. There may be more to it than this, though... my knowledge here is limited here.

YUKI93, 02 May 2024Last year's X90 Pro+ had a secondary telephoto camera,... moreThe x100 ultra appears to only have one (3.7x) telephoto lens. The x100pro managed a 4.3x tele by sacrificing some of the sensor (64mp sensor, but only used 50mp due to crop). I bet they had to reduce the zoom to use more (hopefully all) of the 200mp sensor, without making the camera bump look ridiculous.

Last year's X90 Pro+ had a secondary telephoto camera, so I'm hoping to see the same thing happen with this year's X100 Ultra, though I am curious with the effective focal length of it since the X100 Ultra has a 4.3x zoom camera to begin with.

I hope the Ultra is gonna be a big upgrade over the Pro especially in the zoom quality. I was holding off on buying the Find X7 Ultra just so I get the best zoom shooter

Yes, theoretically, though there can be an issue, if they use the Tetra²pixel array.

At 4x, we wou... moreI don't think anyone should realistically expect this to remotely compare to a full-frame camera with an equivalent 360mm lens. The sensor just isn't big enough. In the same breath, this will likely be the best telephoto camera on any smartphone currently available. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Max's (not the best, but good and prob one of the most owned) telephoto lens is a 120mm equivalent with 12mp. If I'm not mistaken, it's sensor size is ~1/3". Cropping in 3x, gives a 360mm equivalent (using what essentially comes out to be a 1/9" sensor); this leaves you with a 1.33mp image before any fancy image processing. As you mentioned, cropping in 4x in the x100u would indeed leave you with the equivalent of just under about a 1/5" sensor (still significantly more area than the iPhone). The key difference is you should (theoretically) be left with nearly a 12mp image after this amount of cropping. Again, nothing compared to what a bulky full-frame setup could do, but still the best of it's class.

Anonymous, 01 May 2024Samsung puts a flagship out once a year
Vivo just releas... moreThat isn't their top flagship.
In the same way Samsung has the S24 Ultra and the S24+, Vivo has the X100 Pro and the X100 Ultra. Samsung had the Note and S series phones before releasing per year. So 2 flagship phones that were mostly similar from Note5 onwards. Why didn't they stop marketing then?
Also why shouldn't Apple stop marketing the Apple Pro models then? Didn't the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro Max come out at different times? You wanna know why? So that iPhones had good media coverage for a longer time. That's why I find it weird that Vivo doesn't advertise much, because they have the golden opportunity to keep stirring up the media but they don't. Guess they don't need to as their products are so good for the most part that people talk about them regardless, enthusiasts do at leasts, unlike shills on youtube and mediocre "journalists" who just review some popular phones and call it a day.

What is your point? That Vivo just should not market? Why not Samsung then? Why not Apple then? Why didn't Xiaomi just stop and not market the 14 Ultra since it was so similar to the 13 Ultra? Why didn't Oppo stop and not market the Find X7 Ultra since it's just basically a Find X6 Pro with a secondary telephoto?
Seriously man that's just one weird ahh take you got there.

No. If they use a 200 megapixel 0.56 micrometer Quad Bayer sensor, then the image quality at 340mm would be better than what any other smartphone camera can produce at 340mm because
-the effective lens diameter would be significantly larger than tele cameras from competitors (as I mentioned before), this leads to sharper objects due to less diffraction and also improves the signal to noise ratio of distant objects in low light conditions or allows for a shorter exposure time with the same signal to noise ratio of distant objects
-more pixels per object than any other smartphone on the market
-even the sensor area would be slightly larger than the sensor areas of most competitors at 340mm, but this is only relevant for the signal to noise ratio in perfect light conditions
The main issue will be the Tetra²pixel array, if they use this array.

Note the upper right portion of the camera on the white device.
The word "ultra" is written inside the circle that appears to be the lens, creating an ugly design that makes it look as if there are four cameras.
It is a shame that they still use such a design in the flagship

That is going to be like using 1/5" behind 360mm lens.
Beyond useless. Even on ipad screen photos taken by digital zoom on expensive phones already look bad.
