But the X100 Pro itself is an improvement over the S24 Ultra imo and the X100 ultra would very much be worth a higher price so I'd be willing to pay for that phone if it went global. A man can only dream though.

If this vivo x100 ultra is not launched globally, I will have to go back to Samsung, the only one that carries it and you can buy it anywhere

Actually, a 200 megapixel Tetra²pixel sensor with Quad pixel autofocus (50 million microlenses) may even have a worse sharpness than a 200 megapixel Tetra²pixel sensor without Quad pixel autofocus (200 million microlenses).
It would be exciting to see a 200 megapixel tele camera without a Tetra²pixel array.

The Honor Magic6 Pro couldn't really leverage its 180 megapixel sensor (probably behaves more like a 45 megapixel Quad Bayer sensor), when you consider that it offers slightly more pixels per angle than a for example Pixel 8 Pro or S24 Ultra.

Anonymous, 01 May 2024The f-number of the X100 Ultra's periscope might be 2.... moreThough it is helpful for 2x and 4x lossless zoom so the telephoto lens can pull double duty for both medium and long range scenarios.

The X100 Ultra might be one of the most secretive launches I've seen, like usually you get hundreds of leaks about iPhones, Pixels, Galaxy S Phones, Xiaomi Ultras, Sony Xperias and even Oppo Find X phones. But the X100 Ultra and the X90 Pro+ were sort of put under the rug for some reason, not as well discussed tho arguably they were at least in the top 3. A shame that they leave the best for China, I might get myself a Vivo if they release a phone with an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner globally. That stuff is crazy important for me with my sweaty hands like when going to the gym or riding my bike my hands get quite sweaty and so an ultrasonic scanner has higher chances of unlocking than an optical one, at least for me.

So the choice of chipset for the ultra variant obviously won't be about raw performance. It's great that users have options to choose from.

The f-number of the X100 Ultra's periscope might be 2.67 according to the source. If we assume that the 85mm periscope camera has a 200 megapixel 0.56 micrometer sensor, then the effective lens diameter of the periscope would be 8.4mm! This would be a new record, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra has 7.76mm, the Huawei P60 Pro has 6.93mm, the S24 Ultra has 5.47mm, the Pixel 7 Pro has 5.43mm.

Due to diffraction, a large effective lens diameter is necessary when you want to zoom much. The larger the effective diameter, the more you can zoom theoretically, if there are enough pixels per angle and if the color filter array/demosaicing or quality of the lens are not an issue.

A 200 megapixel sensor might use a Tetra²pixel array, this could be a problem regarding the angular resolution.

They should improve their software too. I don't see anyone calling it the best mobile OS.
