"In "select regions", if you buy the Xperia 1 VI"

Kinda funny reading this line cause Xperia itself launches only in select regions across the world. Coming from an Indian Xperia fan who so badly wanna see Xperia series launch in India!!

LucasN82, 03 May 2024"Also 8sg3 is not capable of 4K@120 video." The... moreThe 8s gen3 is still not capable of 4K 120 Video, mostly because of Qualcomm, as it definitely does not lack the power for it.

      The Snapdragon 855 could also do 4K 120 and 8K 30, same limits on the 8gen3, but limits of 8K is non existent, 4K 60, 1080p 240.

What Sony needs to do is offer 7 years of OS and security updates on the Xperia 1 VI just like the Samsung Galaxy S24 series is getting other wise I don't see the Xperia 1 VI having any real competition against the Galaxy S24 series at retail. Long-term OS and security updates should be most important when advertising and selling a smartphone.

My concern is they keep all the other specs that are liked (microcard, external headset jack) with what enhancement they throw up in 2024. They should also allow us to download those video and photo software as well, if not included. I prefer them as I have owned DSLR Sony and Minolta cameras for years and the inclusion last year of video pro was amazing!

PhoneFreak45, 03 May 2024They develop them because it sells. Uneducated people like ... moreI generally agree with your comment, but IMO you're actually wrong with this... "I don't deny the efficacy of processing. It can be used to bring out subtle details, and even combine images to get a higher quality result, but even with all that trickery..."

The trickery doesn't "bring out subtle details", it literally makes things up to hide the shortcomings of these tiny cameras. Take a look here: https://petapixel.com/2023/02/04/the-limits-of-computational-photography/

Yesterday I did a quick little test to compare my Xperia 1 III, the Samsung S23 that I have as a company phone and my D850; wanted to see what kind of progress there's been in the past years and I'm constantly reading how Sony doesn't do enough in software and produces bad photos compared to the "big smartphone players" and "AI" processing brings miracles.

Of course, the D850 is in a league of its own, even when you process the photo to S size (around 12 MP to match the phones), but the photo from (now several generations old 1 III) is in every way better than the one from the S23. S23 has, on first sight, less noise and more contrast, but once you zoom in, you see a load of nonsense made-up pixels as in the article above. My "test" pretty much accidentally contained some small text and details (rather dim room, table with several of my lenses, a body measure tape etc., shot at 70 mm or eq. in phones) and all small text and a lot of details get destroyed by (so-called AI) overprocessing and a lot is rendered unreadable. The photo from the 1 III retains more noise throughout but the details look just as they do in real life and are easily readable despite not being very contrasty.

It would seem that we've hit the peak with imaging sensors some years ago, now some are just trying to reinvent the wheel in software, with partially ridiculously bad results. Fake bokeh was one of those, I hope we're now beyond that :D Same will hopefully happen with this "AI processing" nonsense and hundreds of megapixels with a plastic toy lens. The funniest thing is that some really buy 1500 $ phones nowadays "for photography" when they could for the same price buy a good midrange phone and a used DSLR with a few lenses, perhaps a speedlight etc, which for the next several decades certainly won't be surpassed by these. Quite the contrary, 15 years ago I had a Sony Ericsson K800 (?) with an actual small Xenon flash, nowadays they only come with funny little useless (for photos) LEDs, so we're even regressing in some things despite constant promises of oh so incredibly huge progress.

Anonymous, 03 May 2024Literally there is zero phone that is "revolutionary&q... moreRevolutionary will happen as you stated the T sensor, however with better vapor chamber cooling, as well as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 with its NPU, GPU (especially) and power efficiency performances ... you're going to see a LIT of people a Ross thr globe begin to question their need for a laptop. That hardware along with Android 15 giving all devices closer to what we enjoy with Samsung's Dex all we need is higher performing and less limited software.

Example : Why is Tubi, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, AppleTV and so many apps so restricted in which not only in Samsung Dex yet also on Mirror Mode where ONLY the audio is pushed to a TV or FireStick when I want to watch h the content I'm streaming.

Still this is HUGE for photography on smartphones!

"Variable refresh rate too of course". The 1 V was either 60Hz or 120Hz depending on whether it was on or off in settings. This is a big thing.
