iPhone 17 Slim to have a smaller screen than the iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 16 Plus

This might explain the name change, at least somewhat.

Apple is way too focused in making the pro/pro max models the best in everything to maximize sales and profits. The biggest screen, check! The biggest battery, check! The latest processors, check! The longest lasting iphone battery life, check!

Then that bigger non-pro model would become ever so redundant they would have to scrap it in the next year, leaving iPhone fans with the base model with the older chipset, and the pro model with the flagship chipset, and the pro max flagship.

Of course, they would still release an SE model when sales get to record lows every few years or so...

    A 6.9 screen is just ridiculous. Phones getting bigger and bigger (and heavier) make no sense at all.

          Remember that Apple cut corners on the battery cell quality (they used inferior ones) on the recent models since the redesigned 12 models. That's why many people had issues with their iPhone battery health dropping quicker than they anticipated.

            Sad, but that's the reality of the market.

              Hmm, interesting, I'm speculating that Apple might make a single iPhone 17 model (instead of a regular and Plus model). Thus the choice of 6.5" screen, which has been de facto size choice of Android (eg most of Samsung Galaxy A models). It gives Apple two benefits. How?

              Assuming that Apple will increase the 16 Pro models' prices. Let's say from $999 to $1099. Then Apple can price this iPhone 17 slim at $899, and say you're getting a 6.5" LTPO iPhone for $200 less than the 17 Pro. Of course, in reality they're increasing the base iPhone price, again.

              Another side effect is, those who were wanting a larger screen that was on the Plus model, might now be nudged to get the Pro Max. Again, increasing Apple's ASP.

              So 2025, there will only be 3 models. This iPhone 17 "slim," 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max.

              Or... it might be simply that's the only size they can get for the volume/quality they wanted from BoE.

                why not reintroduce the iphone mini series instead of this slim name ?

                      Probably to parallel the Pro model which the 16 Pro would have a 6.4 inch display. Who knows.

                        The Plus has generally better battery life than the Pro Max, I guess apple will fix that with the Slim.

There are no major upgrades as regard to the design/form factor, display or camera this year. The only major upgrade is in the internals (a 3nm chip and 8GB RAM).
                              Next year, the display is finally getting high refresh rate and design/form factor appears to be getting an overhaul, while the internal would get a minor upgrade.

                              For Pro series, the 16 series seems to be getting a design/form factor overhaul while the internals would see a minor upgrade.

                                6.55" is a much more sensible size than 6.69" (iphone 15 plus). Assuming the same aspect ratio and bezel as iphone 15 plus, its width would be exactly 3 inches, which IMO is the maximum width a smartphone should have. Weight should also go down (in the 190g ballpark).

                                The phone should also finally be getting a 120 Hz display. Appears to be shaping up as a good package (thogj I would still prefer the compact 6.1" variant).
