13 May 2024
Sony is finally ditching the 21:9 ratio in favor of the more common 19.5:9 aspect.

mxailanic, 13 May 20245.5 inch 16:9 aspect ratio is the best. I hope we will see ... morelike the old premiums - z5 and xz premiums...
i love those phones, but i think 16:9 phones won't come back as what we do on phones drastically changed since then... vertical scrolling, multitasking and even contents we consume on phones...

sad that... it really gives up 21:9...
i went from 16:9 (z5 premium) to 21:9 (1 ii), at least for work phone, just 18:9 on xz2 compact, and i love that 21:9 since then...
it just made sense to me
+ 21:9 videos (i ripped some of them from my cds)
+ 16:9 yt videos with comsec on the side is just perfect
+ multitasking is just good, say 2 apps on 10:9
+ it made a 6.5 inch phone good in the hand, better than z5 premium at 5.5 inch with 16:9
    ...
hopefully they come back, or at least offer another phone at 21:9 when it's time for me to upgrade from 1v

justasmile, 13 May 2024You’re alone in that opinion. Also have you tried any 6.5” ... moreHave you tried a 6.5" phone with a 21:9 aspect ratio?

I don't get how people still haven't realise that aspect ratio contributes to the size as well, because we measure screens diagonally!

just make a 5R Album Size one.
bring back the Nostalgic Good Photo Golden Ratio.

Anton .el PAPI., 13 May 2024For me it is small yes! and??You’re alone in that opinion. Also have you tried any 6.5” sized screen?

5.5 inch 16:9 aspect ratio is the best. I hope we will see it again.

punmeisterone, 13 May 2024Wouldn't be surprised if Sony had to move to a 19.5:9 ... moreCould well be true. 21:9 is not important anyway to most and annoying to many. For whatever reason, Sony is joining the 19,5:9 club where Samsung and Apple are. Good news, but saw this commin for years.

                That's way too big

justasmile, 13 May 2024Nah you're even funnier calling 6.5" small. For me it is small yes! and??

Sony has started doing what others are doing. 21:9 ratio is the best ratio a phone can have.

[deleted post]Nah you're even funnier calling 6.5" small.

Why does everyone want to be like everyone else? What harm was 21:9 doing to them? What's next to be removed - headphone jack, sd card slot, notchless display?

First, Asus ducked up with their Zenfone 11 ultra nonsense, and now this. :(

Those who wanted that wide form factor already had every other brand available to them!

tt, 13 May 2024Only the sales results will show how successful this model ... moreSony sales don't have enough data points to make any statistically significant inferences

brsdrgn, 13 May 2024Very good examples and I agree. Probably the Sony cult w... moreI agree with the 4K part. I own an Xperia 5 ii, my brother has an Xperia 1 ii. Same generation. Playing the same video on both phones, we could see no (and I mean absolutely no) difference in picture quality. Sony may have done this back in the days to set themselves apart from the Samsung, Apple and the like. And they did it right, but ultimately to no avail. The human eye could barely perceive anything below 400 dpi, so why offer 700+? If not for marketing purposes.

As for the 21:9 aspect ratio, I strongly disagree. I intend to buy the 1 VI and I'm rather worried about the new 19:5 aspect ratio. You can't explain this to someone who hasn't used one. Just imagine you would have to use a Blackberry phone and you would start to understand where this is heading.

Anonymous, 13 May 2024I will still stick to 21:9 All i need is a broad screen. To do, touch and see anything in a relaxed way. Without pulling the phone close to my face. A slim, less then 70mm broad phone has zero value to me. Completely makes no sense. Can easily grab something that is 78 mm broad and my hands are not huge. What really, really IS annoying though are +16,5 cm tall phones. Laughable devices.
I knew Sony was on the wrong road for years and here is the proof; they go 19,5:9 at least for some models. The fault was to go EXCLUSIVELY 21:9. It made no sense to force everybody into that. Sony is comming back to it senses and i was just waiting for it to happen and here it is. Such liberation. Mind you Samsung went before from their stretched 20:9 experiments to a broader 19,5:9.
                                Just Logic.

Should be 6.7inch, xperia 5 be 6.1-6.5inch. win for large phone lover and smaller phone lover. Disappointed on 6.5inch as i get used to large phone

Samsung did it on their A40 and from experience it's genuinely perfect. They also started using it on their S24U (S23U was a tad bit wider, and I'd love to see a 19:9 Ultra). Even iPhones use it.

Probably the Sony cult will jump on me for what I'll be saying.

It never made sense to use that tall of a screen with a 4k resolution. I see some complains about losing 4k like their eyes would really perceive that pixel density. There's nothing wrong with 2k. I even use it with full hd+ to save battery and all the fonts on my phone set to the smallest. Still enough.

Also 21:9 seemed ridiculous to me considering some apps are not still one handed friendly, it was hard to reach to the top point. Maybe reading an article and seeing an entire page was good for these people or being able to see more messages on the screen while talking. However, why complain so much over new aspect ratio? You don't lose much. And if you still like having a fit phone in your hand, with that screen size it seems like it's gonna be a day and night difference.

What people should rather pay attention is the price, heating problems, and lastly the OS updates. You create the demand and they will respond. But all I see from Sony enthusiasts is that they defend the phones like crazy. Calm down a little.
