Good luck with this one as they're an invaluable partner to 3-letter govt agencies.

I gotta remind people that "iCloud" storage is just a bunch of Google drive servers that Apple pays for.

Look it up and see the true.

Wait with a factory reset the storage is not securely wiped but technically from what I read online, the encryption key is changed. So even with a jailbroken device and a file recovery tool like the PC software Recuva, you wouldn't be able to restore anything. So it's either that the encryption key doesn't change or it's stored for some reason on the device. Still though how can a bug recover deleted files?

*For those who don't know, if you delete a photo it goes to the trash bin, then if you delete it from the trash bin as well, the data isn't completely gone. the binary data is still in the storage chip and until something overwrites it, the data of the photo is technically there.

**Some people say that the photos were store in Apple's servers and by mistake they loaded them on the devices they were originally taken from. Well I don't believe this theory, at least I want to believe so.

"a detailed explanation by Apple would've been appreciated since some users reported seeing images that were deleted years ago"
        ...
        "deleted YEARS ago"

Anyone who knows even the basic of how files are stored and deleted, will have alarm bells ringing in their head on seeing that word "years".

Local storage is not infinite, especially given apple's LOL minuscule levels, so deleted data doesn't truly get "deleted" until its overwritten by data (some caveats apply, but that's the gist of it) over and over again, which does happen over the course of minutes/days/weeks/months. So how the heck is the device able to authentically pull back stuff that has been deleted YEARs ago?? Or are they making unauthorized backups of our photos/data on their servers and had an oopsie where iCloud pushed the backups onto our devices by a mistake on their end and let the cat out of the bag?

Especially now that Tom, Dick and Harold Harryson is training all kinds of BS AI LLMs on our data both public and private, I think this is a massive issue that needs to have it's lid blown fully open by EU, because we all know that US got apple babies sitting in government who will turn the blind eye for the right amount of lobbying, and by lobbying I simply mean BRIBE money.

My first iPhone was a 14 that I purchased over a year ago, I have no illusions about this company. But the hell, this so called "security better" narrative about Apple just died a silent death with this whole fiasco. This might be bigger than just a few resurfaced photos and we might be seeing only the tip of the iceberg, we should not let this issue get swept under the rug.

I purposely updated my iPhone to iOS 17.5 to resurface my old videos from 2022. NOTHING HAPPENED!!!

The really worrying thing is that the photos have not been deleted. They exist on Apple or Google or Samsung or whoever.
And nobody knows who has access to them and what is being done with them. The same will apply to texts, messages, etc.
You can see how data protection and privacy really work, how seriously this is taken by the big companies... if everything is still there, just not visible to the data owner. They simply don't give a shit about anything, laws, personal rights and so on. They don't see us end users as customers, but as products that can be used to make a profit.

Apple store your data no matter what 🫨 we don't have control over our photos too 🍌

Brandon Butch did a video that explains it pretty well, turns out it was a bit of a nothing burger. Still, nothing gets traction quite like a good Apple controversy eh 🤷‍♂️

So, the bug fix is to ensure that Apple can maintain its privacy regarding their archive of users' photographs! So, it is true then—the rumors that OS manufacturers keep all they can get of our work! When we update and input our OS password, all our work is accessible to Apple or Microsoft for the taking. This is the real reason all apps are always demanding your machine's passwords. Was it Marx who said, "Property is theft"?
The answer with OS, Safari, and iOS updates is to let them download and then disconnect once the installation process begins, because leaving it plugged in online when you no longer need to is a very real risk.
