Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra to pack massive camera upgrades

Samsung will neglect some of its cameras no more.

Just give me a high end smartphone that doesn't have half of its production budget wasted on camera's that will always be more shitty than a dedicated digital camera. There simply is no 8 Gen 3 phone that doesn't have multiple camera's, telezoom, optical zoom blablabla.

Anonymous, 28 May 202450MP and 200MP sensors aren't made the way they for &q... moreThe 50MP and 200MP sensors on smartphones are not true 50MP / 200 MP sensors. The color resolution in both cases is the same, i.e. 12.5MP (50 MP uses one color filter for 4 pixels while 200MP uses one color filter for 16 pixels). So you only get more data only in respect of the light information.

Let's take for example the main sensors of S24 Ultra and Pixel 8 series. Both are 1/1.3" sensors. The former has 0.6 μm and the latter has 1.2 μm. Basically each pixel in the latter sensor has been sub-divided into 4 more pixels.

But except in perfectly lit situations, the actual amount for additional detail resolved with the additional count of pixels will be very limited given the very small pixel pitch, which has its own set of challenges such as diffraction limits, not to mention the computation load for demosaicing will be much higher given the 16x difference between color resolution and number of pixels.

Now you might assume that there is no harm in having more pixels i.e. in the worst case (dimly limit) situations, the data from four 0.6 μm would be combined and it would be equivalent to one 1.2 μm. Well that assumption is also faulty. Pixels are divided by seperators which are slightly larger than 0.1 μm, and these seperators don't collect any light information, so basically you lose around 20% of the effective area of the pixel.

That's why, in most use cases, for the same sensor size, a 50MP sensor would give you a better quality than a 200MP sensor, whether your output is 12.5MP or 50MP.

They don't even need to change their sensors. It's their software that sucks. My old P30 Pro camera is miles ahead of my S23 ultra.

RaviSS, 27 May 2024Agreed. With the same sensor size, a 50MP sensor can give b... more50MP and 200MP sensors aren't made the way they for "extra fake optical zoom". They're made to increase data input, to allow software to more accurately calculate the real colour and brightness of each pixel. This is done, because the hardware itself in a smartphone is extremely limited by two variables, compares to a decent system camera: physical size of the whole camera and more importantly, notably less quality control on mass produced parts, often in the tens of millions compared to tens of thousands on system cameras. Therefore, more MPs means more data. That is also the reason Samsung is hard at work creating a 600MP sensor for future phones.

As the Vivo X100 Ultra has 64 effective megapixel at 150mm with a Tetra²pixel array, I think it would be interesting if Samsung made a 64 megapixel 150mm camera with a Quad Bayer array.

Lol Samsung what to say, i take break from Samsung the coming years... For sure. It was my plan this year but couldn't resist the S24 Ultra flat display.
In a bunch of years I got to minor upgrades each year from Samsung. Much better phones out there, Chinese to yes.

I hope next year will be the year of flat displays and 6000+ mah batteries etc and Samsung don't win this race unless they rly want it. But they are to greedy so I don't believe in them at all...

For telephoto, good 3x is enough but should have higher aperture and higher resolving power, and also better zooming algorithm to atmost 6x lossless digital zoom and hdr, rather than 100x fuzzy space zoom camera.

If companies want to spend money on phones, let it be spent on features that are of the most interest to the consumer. It's their hard-earned money that foots the bill for the research anyway.

With the same sensor size, a 50MP sensor can give better output on its own upto 2x zoom when compared to a 200MP sensor. And with capable telephoto lenses, the only advantage of 200MP sensor over 50MP sensor (i.e. 4X optical zoom) disappears.

I would also argue that having a good quality telephoto lens (~4x zoom) can be better than having two average 3x and 5x lenses.

"Tech enthusiasts are in the minority. Most people don't care about this camera nonsense you guys always argue about."

This. But people tend to forget that because we're in a tech site. Geeks/enthusiasts are maybe 5% of all consumers, probably not even that. Smashing majority of consumers buys an A15, A35 or a refurbed iphone 12 for example and are amazed of how good their photos look like....

I use the same phone, and u already know that x3 telephoto is the main cam for portraits... also the ultra-wide has many use cases especially when recording videos in cars (the main cam can't capture the entire scene),, so I would consider those to capture like 25% of my shots

However, I do agree that the main cam needs improvements especially in night time photo and video recording, maybe a 1" sensor is better than any 200 mp sensor samsung will ever make.. I mean, the vivo x100pro from 2023 is embarrassing the s24 ultra in every aspect
