ICQ will finally cease to exist next month

Yes, it was still alive, somehow.

Pumpino, 28 May 2024This is how we used to communicate on the internet. It was ... moreHmmm idk man, sometimes hate and negativity can flourish in tight and closed spaces too, like public group chats. Arguably, it can be even worse than social media since bullying is made easier.

Back then when the cost of mobile messaging was (relarively) quite expensive, ICQ saved my wallet since I can use it to send free SMS.

      Anyone else also remember Palringo?

You also needed to be of a certain age to know what that is. I'm not even sure if that IM platform still exists now, but if it does, I would like it to be dead. There were always so many shtty people on there.

ICQ died when QIP was taken over by RBC. That was main ICQ client in Russia.

There goes one of my favorites IM 😭😭
During my younger years, ICQ, YAHOO and MSN was my IM. ICQ for private while Yahoo and MSN for works.
Damn, really miss those era 😢

This is how we used to communicate on the internet. It was free of the hate and negativity we get from the cesspool that is social media today. The good old days of the internet.

I wouldn't say todays messenger apps are superior to old ones.

I remember WLM (Windows Live Messenger) being far better than anything we have today. It was really jammed packed with great stuff.

Personally I'd rather see the servers for the ICQ service go on living, to be used with applications like bitlbee, franz, and many others. Especially since these aren't really being looked at as much as spyware trash like whatsapp and whatnot. Cheers. RIP GB
NF ICQ. Being one of the first to register an account with icq, but not nearly the first, I mean, just by the sheer amount of people I had on my pitiful list (probably 300+) it was by far > aim / yahoo and so did people who migrated from those very... americanized platforms also, it was definitely the biggest in Europe.

I know ignorant people here will just shrug it off and not give a care in the world, but it's sad to see these old services go down just like a poof.

Sure, they might not be "modern" like the new shiny options out there, but they arent worse either (and mind you, perhaps those old versions were better in terms of privacy).

It feels just like when landline phones started disappearing

                              Absolute legend

                                Who ?
