Alenitchev , 04 Jun 2024No thanks to both phones. Slow charging doesn't cut it... moreand after a few weeks the battery will be bad with 80W charging
even with slow charging atleast the health will be good and it can last the whole day so i dont see a problem with it not having fast charging

No thanks to both phones. Slow charging doesn't cut it these days. It's really hard to go back to charging with less than 80W speed.

Reviewers keep mentioning the Pixel 8's price will drop, but so will the 8A's.

But Apple users aren't that dumb and I don't think they'll leave Apple for some random Android OEM just because they previously used a Pixel device. Additionally, the Pixel is miles ahead of the rest of the Android OEMs, especially in the camera and software departments. Certainly Apple's market share remains at the top and continues to increase even in countries like South Korea, Samsung's country.

Anonymous, 01 Jun 2024Wow. Your post is amazing. What you're saying sounds g... moreWell, I look at it in a slightly different way. It's actually when I am paying $60 (Google/Samsung) or $100(Apple) for an additional 128GB of on-device storage, that I am getting short-changed, since 256GB hardly cost $5-10 more than 128GB to these companies. When I get their cloud storage plan, they have to incur higher cost than that (storage costs, bandwidth costs etc.). So in a way, I am getting more value for my money.

In the end, I guess it comes down to personal preferences and respective cost structures of on-device storage and cloud storage, and this will vary significantly. If you are getting 128GB additional storage for $20-30, like many Chinese brands offer, then it is a no-brainer. But when the differential is above $50, I think one should evaluate the pros and cons of both the options before making a decision.

Upgrading every so often and selling the old phone while it's still worth something isn't a bad thing.

It's not a true camera comparison because time and light conditions are completely different and even the position is slightly different because there is a visible parallax.

When the 8a hits €250 I'll buy it for my old folks. Until then it's a dud.

Anonymous, 01 Jun 2024Cutting Apple's market share in North America is liter... moreOnly Google could do that. The Google Pixel is the only android phone that appeals to iphone users simply because Google who makes the operating system integrates their features into the phone. (+ Google has a large ecosystem of products unlike most Android OEMs except for Samsung)

This is why Google has been focusing on selling Pixel only in wealthy western countries like the US & not in the third world. (Their OEMs are already hurting apple for them, they don't have to do the extra work in emerging & small markets)

This is also why Google has been hyper focused on the "Best Phones Forever" marketing campaign. It specifically adheres to apple users. The goal of Pixel in the short term is not to compete with Samsung or any of their OEMs, it's just there to convert apple users.

Even the Google Store trade-in value confirms this. They'll pay higher for iphones compared to android phones, because you're already in their ecosystem.

What you're saying sounds great, but I'm sick of the 128GB storage and lack of a microSD slot. 7 years of software updates is something never seen before in the industry and I think it is better to be prepared and have at least 256GB of storage in 2024. The offers of the regular Pixel 8 with 128GB of storage are just a scam. They only want you to pay for Google cloud services. I would never pay for that because I prefer to spend all my money on video games.

Anonymous, 01 Jun 2024It's literally impossible not to need more storage spa... moreI agree with you that having good amount of storage available is important, but you don't really need to have all of it on-device, given the option of cloud storage. I have a Google One storage plan (I had gotten a 3-month 100GB trial with my Pixel 6a, and have since continued with it) and I think it is a very good alternative to spending more on higher storage plans.

Of course, there would be certain limitations such as you would need internet to access your data, or if you are recording lots and lots of 4k videos, you might run out of storage before backing them up to cloud. But these disadvantages are more than compensated by the fact that you data is secure (i.e. if you don't have backup, you might lose all your data if your device goes kaput) and that you are able to access your data from your other devices as well. Not to mention you can share a part of your storage quota with your family members.

Cloud storage makes financial sense too. Google charges $60 more for the additional 128GB storage. Alternatively, you can get a 100GB plan for $20 annually or a 200GB plan for $30 annually. So you can very well get the 100GB plan after a couple of years when you are close to running out of storage and then upgrade to 200GB plan if/when you run out again. The overall cost of the additional storage would be in the same ballpark.

In India (where I live), the costs are even more in favour of cloud storage. The premium for the 256GB variant of Pixel 8 in India is INR 7000, whereas the 100GB and 200GB Google One storage plans cost INR 1300 and INR 2100 per year. I am planning to upgrade to Pixel 8, and when I do, I will go with the 128GB variant itself, and along with the 100GB plan I have, it should be sufficient for me for years, and if I do run out of storage, I will simply upgrade to the 200GB plan.

Google had already launched XL devices years ago and there was also a Pixel 3a XL. It is still too early to draw conclusions. But the Pixel 'a' series is great and I bet Google won't kill it. I'm sure Google also loves the Pixel 'a' series and that's why it releases exclusive colors for those devices. Samsung is more likely to eliminate its FE series or Apple its SE series.
