ProMax Ultra, 29 May 2024While all big core design is quite efficient as A7XX cores ... more9300 already doesn't use the A5X cores, and Snapdragon has been gradually replacing them with A7X cores. So maybe they aren't really needed, a downclocked A7X will do the job.
8 Gen 4 will use Oryon, and maybe even all cores will be Oryon like the X Elite.

And comparing my phones on 4G to them on 5G, the difference in thermals is pretty minimal. Comparing my current phones to my old 4G phones, the 4G phones actually ran hotter.

Unlike Samsung's Exynos SoCs (past processors at least like the Exynos 7420), Qualcomm always puts their 5G Modem in the SoC even as far back as the 810 which debuted along with Exynos 7420. Still, the heat difference between 4G and 5G is noticeable.

BananaPeel, 01 Jun 2024No sht, the 5G modem is a component in the chipset.Actually this is only true for MediaTek afaik. Qualcomm likes to put their 5G modems separate to the chip last time I checked. Still the most heaty bit of your processor will be CPU and GPU, even on MTK designs.

Anonymous, 29 May 202434% lower power consumption?
every year new nodes and ne... more"every year new nodes and new chips are released with double-digit decrease in power consumption and double-digit increase in performance but phones' battery endurance never increased significantly."
Let me explain in average Joe language.
the meaning of 30% more efficient is if the new chip set at the same speed as the old chip.
ex. If Dimensity 9400 were set at the same speed as Dimensity 9300, it will be 30% more efficient. The same speed here is for example, the same Antutu number, or the same geekbench number.
Since the new chip were set at faster speed, then it's not at 30% more efficient.

Vikass17, 29 May 2024If X5 is successor of X4 and better than X4 , why use X4 th... moreX5 is supposedly much larger & powerful core than X4.
Heard leaks of X5 finally catching up on Apple single core performance so X5 should be significantly larger/widee to show such massive gains.
This might explain why 4 X5 cores would make SoC to become quite bigger than previous one,all while increasing cost significantly as TSMC nodes are expensive.

every year new nodes and ne... moreThe 34% metric is when you compare the first generation 5nm (N5) node with the second generation 3nm process (N3E). In between we had N5P, N4 (a small die shrink of N5P), N4P and N3B.
So, specifically due to the manufacturing node improvements in 3.5-4 years, we get either 18% more performance with the same power, or 34% less power consumption for the same performance.

Vikass17, 29 May 2024If X5 is successor of X4 and better than X4 , why use X4 th... moreMaybe the new architectural changes has traded high frequency performance for low frequency power consumption. When the A710 succeeded the A78, the high frequency performance is better but the low frequency power that actually had more use cases is worse than the A78. Then, the A715 came which was only a minor buff to the A710. It wasn't until the A720 that the Cortex A7 series had a major upgrade, which saw lower power consumption all across the frequency points. As for the X4 I have no idea. I still wish they went for a 2+6 approach kinda like what the 8 Gen 4 might be.

every year new nodes and new chips are released with double-digit decrease in power consumption and double-digit increase in performance but phones' battery endurance never increased significantly. of course if you compare 10 years old chips with today's chips there will be a significant difference but nowadays I don't have the feeling that anything improved. maybe it is because apps nowadays consume a lot more energy since they need much more processing to do the same thing they did years ago (contradiction?).
